JayBeeS3
Just found this piccie in the newspaper today. Apparently the builder first wanted to make a 10 wheel version but couldnt find the correct size tyres....

Sven
The shape is not bad, but WTF is the idea about the 6 wheels? I can't imagine it'll do much good for handling... (Somehow I could have understood four driven rear wheels, but four non driven front wheels...?)

[/ QUOTE ] 5 years ago I first heard of Covini, when he built the C36 a diesel capable of speeds over 300km/h. After some more research it seems all his consepts since 1978 have been diesel powered. This is the first Covini using a petrol engine, and what engine did he choose?? The Audi 4.2 V8 powerplant.. The arguments for unsing 6 wheels where the first 4 wheels are in the front are... Better brakeing, and less chance for aquaplan. The two first wheels moves water out of the way, and the next two wheels then drive on practically dry road , better handling and comfort. Whatever.. More Covini pics..

Ari
Remember the Tyrell six wheel racing cars? Had a Corgi one as a boy. There was also a roadcar brought out then, ultra luxurious American convertible with four front wheels.

Sven
Yeah, but their reasoning says: ------------------------------------------------------------ The main advantages: - less risk for front tyre deflating - less risk of aquaplaning - better braking - better grip - better comfort - better absorbing of frontal impact ------------------------------------------------------------ Mathematically you'd say the more tyres, the more risk.... (yeah, I know...) BTW: my GF once changed a tyre for a set of pinstriped yups (all men), since they couldn't manage between the four of them. But then she's not very average... 944Tom
The car you are referring to is the Tyrell P34 - I believe that it was not banned, it was something to do with the tyre manufacturers not supporting Tyrell's 6-wheeler effort, and Tyrell found it very difficult to make the tyres themselves. I know that's a bit vague, but I think that's how the story goes. The other advantage of this 6 wheel layout in an F1 car is that there is less drag at the front of the car. Ari
So what about the six wheel road car that came out on the back of this F1 car then? Anyone got any clues as to what it was? All I can remember was it was American, massive, convertible and very luxurious rather than sporty. Oh and it had a telephone built into the drivers door which really impressed me at the time!
