Speed cameras DON'T save lives

Just heard on the local Yorkshire news that road deaths last year in Yorkshire were up from 54 in 2002 to 72. In that time, the number of speed cameras on Yorkshire's roads has more than doubled.

A brief quote from a retired Chief Inspector:

[ QUOTE ]

A constable has told me how he has been able to afford a holiday home on the proceeds of all the overtime he's done dealing with speeding issues.

[/ QUOTE ]

Just confirms something that we all knew anyway.

BTW, did anyone see the Trevor McDonut program last week, I think, where they were reviewing road safety, and in particular Speed cameras ? I didn't get to see it, so just wondered whether they toed the party line or came out on the side of common sense.

It does seem like this issue is getting more and more visibility. No doubt it won't bring down Mr slippery Blair, but hopefully it won't take too long before a sensible policy is adopted for speed cameras.

I watched the program and found it a bit confusing really, for a while they were suggesting speed cameras are to harsh and they interviewed a bloke who has been jailed for doing 37mph. They then went on to interview Captain Gatso who is involved with damaging cameras and they slagged him off. It was a sloppy piece of journalism in my opinion, they didn't ask some of the obvious questions. frown.gif

Recent Statistics for number of people killed on Northamptonshire's roads:

1993 43

1994 36

1995 47

1996 41

1997 57

1998 60

1999 76

2000 58

2001 46

2002 62

When measuring statistic it is always advisable to remove rouge figures, so it you remove 36 and 76 that makes 2002 the highest on record not very good considering the safety camera partnership started in 1999.

similar in Oxfordshire.

A40 from Cheltenham to Oxford has/had some 14 speed cameras along it.

They deemed it fit, to place them in stretches where it is SAFE to overtake, meaning people start overtaking Where it IS NOT SAFE.

it was one of the stretches of roads the ABD (The Association of British Drivers) flagged up as being dangerous and uncalled for.
