Mook
You'll soon learn Flynn that very few threads on Tyresmoke stay on the original topic. I run oil pressure, oil temp, water temp and boost gauges in my track car, because that's driven flat out all the time - on track. I've never had extra gauges in any road car, because there's no need, even if you're driving it hard. If your car is modded properly, then it will run standard temps. Flynn
But that's the thing though, you need the readouts from the gauges to mod it properly. Theres no point turning up the turbo and then just guessing the boost level.
cabby
I think we have a contender for 'thread of the year' and it's only January. What's with the cats Flynn? I'm finding them a bit unnerving.
Flynn
They give me an immediate advantage in internet arguments:) Or I might find themamusing in a sick kind of way.
Scotty
So are you just cranking up the fuel and boost and will watch it whilst you drive or is there gonna be any mapping going on?
Flynn
Hello Scotty (OAP) and thank you for asking the first sensible question. The engine in my car has no ECU, the fuel pump is driven by the cambelt and all the settings are made by adjustment of various components on the pump and turbo. Scotty
Wrong choice of words from me. I guess I should have said tuning instead of mapping. i.e. expert tuning rather than a quick tweak and test. Still can't see much point on this car TBH. What sort of gains are you expecting? Flynn
20-40 horse power from just pump and turbo tune. 40-70 horsepower with front intercooler and bigger turbo. The whole entire reason I chose this car was for it's tunability. It's a great base for a sleeper too. Edit, what is the point of getting an expert to tune it when you can do it yourself? lol. Scotty
If you can then fair play. It's just your internet persona hides that ability extremely well. e.g. if you can't power three gauges on a car without asking a forum then how the feck can you have the ability to tune a car? Flynn
Every job I've done so far is a first time experience, often by myself because I don't know anyone who knows about cars to help me. The only job I've had help on so far is doing the cambelt when a friendly local garage took pity on me when I told them I was thinking of doing it myself. I was able to do it in their yard and call one of the guys over when I got stuck on several occasions. The only information sources I have are; 1. Haynes manual, 2. Googling things up, 3. asking on forums. I would much rather ask a basic question than mess something up.
Mook
If you're tuning a car, to set it up so it doesn't self destruct, set it up properly on a dyno, regardless of whether the car runs an ECU or not. Gauges in a car are for monitoring, not setting up.
