bradeywalker
Was wondering what all you soot chuckers out there thought gave the best results, chips or tuning boxes. I have a tuning box fitted, I have not had this checked but they say it will increase to (150 bhp stock) 180 bhp and torque is up to 286? I think? Turbo kicks in at just above 2000 revs.
SJD530d
I am more than happy with my tuning box (original TuningBox from www.tuningbox.com). I like, other than the power and torque, the fact that it is quick and easy to fit/remove yourself, etc. Re-maps are decent as well but you need to return to the "mapper" for removal come service time and the like. Many of the re-maps as well are no different to the plug-in boxes. People often talk about the downside of the plug-in upgrades in that they are pre-set. But so are many re-maps - unless you go for an individual re-map for your particular car - although many of the ad's you see for re-maps are not of this sort. Chipping (or the physical removing of a chip and replacement one added) is somewhat outdated now and few cars need this approach. The vast majority can be done via the diagnostics port. One of the few that is still trying to be cracked is the 150bhp version of the BMW 320d though. SJD
bradeywalker
I bought my tuning box for the fact of being able to remove it at any time, especially when a service is due, etc. Thanks for the info SJD530d (I know its off topic but how does your 530d perform compared to a golf tdi 150...tuned to 180bhp?) SJD530d
To be honest I've not come across a tuned 150 bhp TDi - in all honesty I haven't seen many of them on the road round my way. (more R32's!) I haven't done any real timing myself but the box I have gives indentical figures to the "big" BMW tuners like Hartge and more importantly BMW's ownn in-house version (which you can't buy in thr UK as I tried!) from AC Schnitzer. According to the ACS figures it knocks between a second and a second and a half from the 0-60, in-gear times, etc. I'm very pleased with it which I guess is the most important thing. Thorney
You could always OneClick it from AmD.

Techie
Most 'tuning' boxes are not more thana couple of resistors that fool your engine ECU into thinking the engine is colder than it is, thus incresing fuel. A propper remap though will also alter boost giving a better drive and result. Mine has been remapped using the One Click and im now pumping quite a happy result. Mine is a custom job but AmD can also provide a 'generic' One Click for a milder upgrade.

[/ QUOTE ] Techie, would you say tuning boxes do any harm to the engine? and if I changed to a OneClick Amd would I get better performance? If that is the case I would think about changing. I went to ABT and they said they could upgrade it to just over 200bhp, the problem with that is I would be wheel spinning everywhere!! Thanks for the link Markpaq. Techie
I wouldnt say the tuning box does any harm to the engine, maybe over long term over fueling may cause blockage of the CAT (which is a particle filter bascially)but no they are on the whole a very effective means of cheaply getting performance. But how does it compare to a remap. No contest really both in power output and driveability the remap is better as its altering not only fuel but boost aswell. And if you are running a 130 PD 200 is possible but not for long. The VNT 15 turbo will pack up shortly after producing that figure. the 150 VNT 17 turbo is a fair bit stronger, as is our hybrid turbo for the PD. bradeywalker
Thanks for the info Ross, I take it from your signature you work at Amd? I am currently driving a TDI 150 (with Bromleys Tunit Box), what would it cost me to upgrade it at Amd?

SJD530d
A friend of mine with the same car as I have (530d Sport auto E39) is after a re-map - do you have any power/torque figures and a price, etc for the One-Click on this model Techie? Thanks in advance.
