My mate's A6 3.0 TDi Le Mans

I got to drive it to this mornng. I had to drop it off at my local VAG specialist for some work.

My thoughts:-

Fecking noisy tyres. Very loud (relative to the rest of the car!)

Ride on the Le Mans is fine, no issues even over some nasty roads. I didn't think it harsh or overly stiff.

Steering - much lighter than my current A6

Interior - much better (obviously). Funny/wierd electric handbrake. Feels wierd that you don't need to 'take it off' for it to move off.

Performance - Fab, although with diesels with an autobox, you get a bit of lag (same as in a manual if you take off with no throttle and then ask it to move!). but once on the move, any touch on the throttle and it moves off pretty swiftly. Due to the amount of traffic about, I ddin't get to kickdown or play with the flappy paddles - I'll do that on the way home.

Brakes - Fab!

Gearbox - Chuffing smooth, and you don't notice it go in gear or change gear. Would I prefer a manual in it? Possibly - and I never thought I'd say that, but maybe it's because it's a diesel and I am now use to a manual multi-cylinder diesel. I'd still have the auto in our A6 2.7T petrol

Would I have one - yes, but not with the 19" wheels, I'd want a quieter ride.

What tyres is it on though?

The S4 came on Dunlops and I cannot wait to chuck them in the bin. Noisy, hard riding, crap in both wet and dry. Will be going for Goodyear Eagle Assymetric 2s, or maybe the more compromised Michelin Pilot Super Sports now I have a set of winter wheels lined up. RS4 owners love them. Currently not available in the S4s unusual 235 size, but more sizes may become available.

Having said that, even with Dunlops, you soon take quattro for granted - managed to get wheelspin in third this morning in the rain leaving a roundabout in the A3 (2.0 TDi 140 manual fwd Sport) as the turbo came on song before the traction control cut in and lit up the dash. Wasn't even going for it tbh! Michelin Pilot Sport (3s I think) have been most disappointing. Whilst they are only about 3 / 2.5 mm, the Assymetrics gripped like glue right down to 1.6mm - and wore completely evenly across the tread. It will be back on a set of Goodyears soon - fresh Goodyears already on the rear, swapped from the fronts after the previous front Michelins wore out.

At the moment, it's on Pirelli P Zero's I think on the front. Probably on the back too, but not too sure. And of course they are the 19" with 35 profile rubber? Plenty of tread, and it does corner VERY flat with no roll!

Unlike my 55 profile jobs!!!!

Drove it again! Lovely!

It has some DSP sound pack??? It's great, drowned out the tyre roar nicely without deafening me. Very crisp.

Still didn't get to play properly though, as there was too much traffic this monring.

Another thing I noticed was the seperate fan speeds for driver & passenger, all displayed on the monitor. Neat touches. Probably the same for the bum warmers?

I still don't like the electric handbrake! And I daren't play too much with the MMI.

If you have the DSP option in the audio it's just the BOSE upgrade... The one where you can change the driver focus etc...

Tyre noise is not an issue we have in ours - Conti Sport 3's here.

Ont he trip back, the DIS was reading 38 mpg and going higher. Is was doing about 80, with lots of heavy acceleration using the paddles and taking off rapidly from the roundabouts on the way. So probably not too bad and I am sure I could move that up to 44+ if I tried and was cruising 'nicely' at 70/75.
