Booster
Does it matter which cables go into which ports? [/iTdummkopf]

Booster
Cheers Mook. Didn't want to take out the old ones then realise they had to go back in a certain order!!
Mac
If this is in your office Booster is it possible you have any VLANs configured? No idea how big your office network is - if you do have VLANs set up ports could be important depending on how the switch is configured. Booster
Mook is right. I have no idea to what you refer! However, it I do know it is an unmanaged switch. Very small network (there is only six of us plus two servers on the network). Getting this if it helps: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/cr/B001AUL7A6/ref=aw_d_cr_computers?qid=1340141633&sr=8-
patently
If there are any ports away from the main bank the it might make a difference which cables go into those ones. If there is just one single or double bank of ports then you should be ok putting them back randomly. I'm assuming all the devices are computer-type things, no IP phones or other stuff wanting power over Ethernet? My PoE router has 8 powered ports & 8 unpowered, so those are different. No plans for expansion or a network printer/scanner, etc ? Don't you need a link to your web access point or anything else? Booster
The second server is our web access point Scotty. The switch we have now is so old it can't cope with some data packets. I think it was installed in 2003!!

patently
Our policy is: If it ain't broke don't try to fix it!! Also: Keep all IT staff away from the IT equipment unless absolutely necessary. If you let them near it, they fiddle with it to "make it better" and all of a sudden you find yourself helping restore the main server from backup at midnight*. *actually happened to me. I'm with you there - we've got some steam powered stuff at work that still works. Until it unplugs itself and walks out, it's staying switched on
Booster
Also: Keep all IT staff away from the IT equipment unless absolutely necessary. I am the IT man!! I also have other roles:I put the dustbin out on a Friday, change lightbulbs, underwrite finance, sign the cheques but never, ever make the tea!! The joys of running your own company!!! Wouldn't change it for the world!
