Cuprabob
Miracle escape for driver in terrifying crash after hurtling off track and flipping SIX times through the air | Mail Online I appreciate it's not a Caterham but similar :-)
garcon magnifique
The most spectacular accidents rarely cause serious injury. It's the sudden stops having hit something that doesn't move that hurt.
m4ttm4son
Holy feck. Need more Hay Bales over there. Don't show mini-Patently that.
garcon magnifique
Have you seen the damage hitting a hay bale can do? Better to have a big run off area ... even if part of it is vertical.

Nope, but I would have thought if he hit a hay bale there it would have knocked him back onto the track instead of down a ravine. Anyway, they work for Goodwood... patently
 Actually, it is a 7. He built it himself, too. It's the sudden stops having hit something that doesn't move that hurt. I think that's true, but have no plans to verify it.
NewNiceMrMe
I think it's safe to say it's the fact that he landed in a lot of deep greenery that saved him there.
Tipex
Hitting hay bales is like hitting a very solid wall, ask the Appolo Gumpert or the AMG Merc drivers at this years Goodwood! In this situation though, I can't help feeling they'd have helped, as mentioned above, they'd have kept him on the track, and given the angle he'd have only given them a glancing blow. garcon magnifique
That's the thing - they don't work at Goodwood and there is a growing campaign to stop using them. Last time I went, I saw the damage the bales did to a new GT3 Aston Vantage V8 at Molecombe.

There is something in that. Mind you, the right kind of armco would do an even better job. But then, it's a bit like the argument in rallying. If hill climbing wasn't quite as dangerous and didn't involve the potential for disappearing down huge scary drops, it wouldn't as much fun... or something. Don't underestimate how big a factor the danger is in the adrenaline rush.
m4ttm4son
Better than hitting 500 people though, probably Well, better for the 500 people sitting behind the bales.

At Goodwood - oh yes indeed. I don't think the argument is to simply remove the bales - rather replace them with something more effective. Of course the arguments against are many and various... m4ttm4son
What alternatives are there? Tyre walls, modern designs?
garcon magnifique
Modern armco barriers that deflect back onto the track, I guess. It'd ruin the whole traditional ambience of the place though. Part of me thinks, if you want to race at a historic site like Goodwood (hillclimb or circuit), you accept historic safety measures.

I'd agree with that TBH. It's not like they stick carbon brakes on all those old duffers, is it?
