Snapshot Image of a linux box?

Recommended Posts

Depending on the kernel you can probably P2V it, I've done it that way a few times when the OS was fine but I needed the box as a VM.

You can also use dd to do a copy of the file system but then getting that up and running as a VM will be a bit of a pain as it'll have the wrong drivers.

What hypervisor are you going to be using? The VMWare Standalone Converter did the trick for me when I setup a new DC a couple of years ago.

I would say though that if you can install a new VM from scratch then that's probably the best option, driver injecting during the P2V process can go wrong.
