Luke
Noticed recently that first gear is getting difficult to put in. Sometimes need to try a few times to get it engaged. Any ideas?
Calm Chris
Gear box oil or clutch wear. My sisters Mk5 gearbox failed, 1.9tdi, they are a fail pint on Mk5's
Luke
Poo. Same car. It's in for a service and MoT, Friday next week. It's on long llife so the oil might be on the low side. Gearbox costings?
Calm Chris
Sisters was £1200 all in and it was never the same and sold on weeks after repair.
Cuprabob
It's on long llife so the oil might be on the low side. Engine oil level wouldn't have any impact on the behaviour of the gearbox. It could actually the selector cables needing adjusted which I believe to be quite common. What I meant was its on long life service intervals, so its been a while since the gearbox oil levels would have been looked at because of that. No problem, not sure how often VW check the oil level on the manual gearbox, if they do at all
Tipex
How many miles has it done? That gearbox does have a few issues, we have occasional failures on our slightly older Octavia's, the even older 1.9 non turbo diesel gearbox was even worse, it was seemingly made of chocolate. Once we get issues we usually just replace the gearbox, as above, it's around £1200 on exchange.
Luke
88000 miles Tipex. Had it from new so guaranteed mileage.
Tipex
That's about the sort of mileage I'd expect problems at to be honest, some last longer, some go sooner. An oil change may help things, and hopefully prolong the inevitable. If you were thinking of a change of car, then change the oil and get it sold. Luke
Car serviced today, found a loose bolt on top of the gearbox. The bolt holds something that engages so first gear slots in??? Anyway it seems to have worked in the short term so will just have to keep fingers crossed. Two new tyres, new suspension part, new bonnet fixing, full service, MOT. Water and bread for the next month! The other half celebrated the cost of it all by buying a new handbag ON MY FÜCKING CREDIT CARD...
