£5k boring workhorse

Searching for a mate.

He has 5 grand to spend on something like an 80k mile 525d estate, for reliable motorway miles and occasional transport of two bloody big GSDs (hence the estate).

Cheap but utterly dependable is the mantra. Must have full history, ideally a dealer car with warranty. Yes this is asking a lot for 5 grand, but leave the negotiation to him, he's good at it.

Anyone know of any suitable cars out there? He might be open to alternatives, but likes his reliable old Beemers.

Cheers muchly. +++

If I was spending £5k with those requirements I'd probably go for...

2007 Honda Accord 2.2 CDTi Sport GT

93k Full Honda history

Nav, Bluetooth

Half leather/alcantara trim

17" alloys

Blah blah

Rock solid engines, 48 mpg, and a very good looking Estate car in my opinion.

£6k at a dealers, probably get it for £5k.

My mate had the mk I estate for 2 or 3 yrs before changing it for the newer shape for another 3 yrs. The newer one was NOT as good as the old. He found the engine was a bit gruffer and not so much ooomph. The rest was fine.

Accord is an interesting shout. Not sure if there are any Insignias worth having for the money but there are shed loads of Vectras.

He should be able to get the V6 CDTi Estate for that money.

Not the most powerful 3l diesel, but it'll be smooth, quiet and refined. Unlike any 4 cylinder and/or PD diesel.

6 cylinders in an Insignia doesn't make sense to me, it's not, and never will be, a luxury car, it isn't fast or particularly refined, and given the power output vs economy, you'd be far better off with a 4 cylinder diesel.

In a big Merc or BMW the extra cylinders make more sense, but not in a repmobile.

I agree that they are not luxury cars, but having 6 cylinders just means that at least the engine is refined and smooth without the drone of a 4 cylinder diesel.

There are a few V6 CDTi's out there. How about the Signum V6 CDTi? Unusual, but a pleasant enough place to be.
