garcon magnifique
Searching for a mate. He has 5 grand to spend on something like an 80k mile 525d estate, for reliable motorway miles and occasional transport of two bloody big GSDs (hence the estate). Cheap but utterly dependable is the mantra. Must have full history, ideally a dealer car with warranty. Yes this is asking a lot for 5 grand, but leave the negotiation to him, he's good at it. Anyone know of any suitable cars out there? He might be open to alternatives, but likes his reliable old Beemers. Cheers muchly.
cruiser647
GSDs? Any Merc fit the bill or would they be a bit ropey at that age? (ie, a Merc R )
garcon magnifique
German Shepherd Dogs. Old Merc E class would probably fit the bill, but potentially ropier than the equivalent BMW?
NewNiceMrMe
If I was spending £5k with those requirements I'd probably go for... 2007 Honda Accord 2.2 CDTi Sport GT 93k Full Honda history Nav, Bluetooth Half leather/alcantara trim 17" alloys Blah blah Rock solid engines, 48 mpg, and a very good looking Estate car in my opinion. £6k at a dealers, probably get it for £5k. shao_khan
My Dad sold his 16month old Insignia recently for £12k, so I'd have thought at 3yrs old they must be rapidly dropping to your mates money.

My mate had the mk I estate for 2 or 3 yrs before changing it for the newer shape for another 3 yrs. The newer one was NOT as good as the old. He found the engine was a bit gruffer and not so much ooomph. The rest was fine.
Twinspark
Those Accords have a reputation for burning oil and then eating turbos. I'd be looking at a PD engined VAG myself. B6 Passat TDI-140 Highline, maybe?
garcon magnifique
Accord is an interesting shout. Not sure if there are any Insignias worth having for the money but there are shed loads of Vectras.
Tipex
Accords are fairly nice, Hondas diesel isn't their finest hour though, performance and economy are way down on the competition, using a 2.2 and still not generating enough power to compete with VAG diesels. xaddiction
How about a Toyota 2.2 diesel Avensis estate. It'll be boring but as reliable as it gets.
cruiser647
Accord is an interesting shout. Not sure if there are any Insignias worth having for the money but there are shed loads of Vectras. He should be able to get the V6 CDTi Estate for that money. Not the most powerful 3l diesel, but it'll be smooth, quiet and refined. Unlike any 4 cylinder and/or PD diesel.
Tipex
6 cylinders in an Insignia doesn't make sense to me, it's not, and never will be, a luxury car, it isn't fast or particularly refined, and given the power output vs economy, you'd be far better off with a 4 cylinder diesel. In a big Merc or BMW the extra cylinders make more sense, but not in a repmobile.
garcon magnifique
Tend to agree. Which is why 3.0CDTi Vectras are like rocking horse sh!t. One thing is certain - he knows very well that if he buys an Audi and it breaks I will take the p!ss out of him remorselessly. A V70 D5 might be an option. They have an XC90 already and like it lots. m4ttm4son
Octavia 1.9 TDi. A friend of mine has one. A very old one. And he loves it. Cheap as chips to run and maintain; and never misses a beat.

I agree that they are not luxury cars, but having 6 cylinders just means that at least the engine is refined and smooth without the drone of a 4 cylinder diesel. There are a few V6 CDTi's out there. How about the Signum V6 CDTi? Unusual, but a pleasant enough place to be.
garcon magnifique
I saw a couple of Saab 9-5s in budget - might be worth a look. Although I suspect my friend's response will be along the lines of, "do I look like a ****ing architect?"
