Milo
Due to the exceptionally long lead time on the S5, I am having dark thoughts about a Range Rover Sport, specifically a 3.0 SDV6 HSE, around 12 months old. Is there anything I need to know about them that would put me right off? What are they like for running costs and residuals?
DanG
Go and have a lie down... You'll be fine in the morning.... (Unless you're partial to an orange tan and a pair of Uggs...)
Milo
I've always fancied one, there's pikey in me somewhere fighting to get out so what better car to do it in? :-)
NewNiceMrMe
Go all the way. Buy an Evoque, paint it black and white, put NUFC badges on the bonnet and doors, whack a couple of air horns on it, black the windows out completely, buy some imitation Khan 22" alloys - and cruise up and down past The Gate on a Friday night. There's only one Range Rover and that's the full fat version. Everything else is, well, a bit naff (no offence intended to anyone).
Booster
Buy the right spec and the residuals are very strong. I too had dark thoughts, especially when I client had one on finance with me and decided he wanted back into a full fat RR. I could have got his for a great price. I then woke up, chucked a load of money at a car that will have **** residuals and won't go uphill in the wet!
Milo
I can't get away with the Evoque, it's not for me (although the pimping sounds good). A full fat RR is out of my budget, as I wouldn't have anything over 12 months old. The RRS though......... :D
NewNiceMrMe
The full fat RR is, well, shockingly pricey - but my god it's a lot of car. Love them. The entry level TDV8 4.4L is now £70,000 - before you hit the options list. The V8 petrol beast now starts at £87,000. I've specced one up to £96,000 in minutes. Milo
It would need to used, and a diesel. A full fat RR up to 1 year old is just too much, I'd never get away with that, it's taken all my cunning to hide the cost of the S5....
jimdiesel
My only experience of them is pushing my neighbours, when it refused to select any forward gears. Of all the cars I have pushed, this was one of the nicest.
eldavo69
My Dad had one and I borrowed it for the odd weekend away. Great car but not as big inside/boot as you might think. Effortless to drive but we were averaging 24mpg knocking round the houses and a couple of longer M-way runs.
saab
I'm pretty sure my next car is going to be a Range Rover, I do love the full fat version but suspect it will be too enormous for Mrs Saab to contemplate it, so i think the RRS would be perfect. I love the looks, and even if it is a bit Footballers Wives I don't really care. It might even squeeze into the garage. The Evoke I'm sure is fine, and I'm sure it will be very popular, but it's not my cup of tea, I'm a big fan of the Range Rover "look" and for me it just doesn't have that. That said I'm not unaware of the reliability issues, a friend of mine had a complete engine failure whilst on the motorway in his £80k 6 month old full fat RR. Also there has been a long running and very public dispute between a customer and the local LR dealer, whilch culminated in the disgruntled customer having his problematic RR signwritten describing the litany of issues with his car and Land Rover's complete failure to deal with them, and then parked outside the dealership. TP27
The V8 petrol beast now starts at £87,000. I've specced one up to £96,000 in minutes. What's also important to note is that having spent that £96,000, it gives you the right to become a Tory Whip - everyone becomes a Pleb or "lesser being" to you, you can park whereever and however you like and it also allows you access to any Disabled Parking bay in the UK - magic !! NewNiceMrMe
MrsMe may well end up with a FF RR next time around. The interiors are very nice but we're also aware they don't have the reliability that an X5 does - nor do they have the build quality in some areas. We're going to wait and see what comes in the next 18 months in respect of facelifts and/or new model release.
Luke
Quite a few of my customers have had RR's. They loved the car but said the reliability was pretty poor. Mirrors that folded in and wouldn't go back. Windows that opened themselves. Battery draining itself was a common one, a friend of mine parked his RR at gatwick airport recently. He has been delayed 10 hours with wife and two youn kids and was totally knackered when he finally touched down. Got to his car at 430am to find it has now power at all. He was quite pleased. Is there going to be a new shape RR Sport as well as the normal one?
Booster
New shape Sport due very soon I believe.

Milo
I didn't realise the RRS was due a facelift but then again, do Range Rovers ever change much anyway? The shape is pretty much the shape. Reliability (or lack of) may be a sticking point as I need to know it's going to work as I need my car every day for work (not commuting but visiting clients, so public transport isn't an option). Booster
I missed this first time around. Does he still have it? Went about six weeks ago mate. He has got a run-out model full fat one with all bells and whistles now!!
Milo
Tell him the new ones are 20% cheaper and I'll take his FF one off his hands at a discount :D

shao_khan
I had a RRS and its on my list of cars I would own again. It was faultless in 30k miles when the lease came up and we nearly brought it but couldnt resist a change. Looking back wish we'd just kept it! Given the choice between RRS and S5 for me the S5 wouldnt even creep into the comparison. Mine in the 30k miles did mostly motorway miles, and based on calcs returned just under 31mpg for the bulk of it smiles. Around town it dropped significantly to mid 20's. rrsport.co.uk is a good resource for information.

garcon magnifique
Brand new FF RR is out imminently, new model rather than facelift. New RRS won't be far behind. I'd sit tight.
Jez
RRSPORT.CO.UK is a good forum for info on reliability but as always forums are for people to moan I have a 2011 full fat and it did have a battery drain issue from new. Battery was replaced with a deeper cycle gel battery as part of a large recall but its been faultless since.
Andrew
Wasn't there a report out recently which citied the RRS as the worst car for reliability?
