Andy_Bangle
When they finished the new SH130 toll road that links the new Circuit of the Americas to downtown, it was decided, with a bit of encouragement from local tuner John Hennessey, that the best way to open it would be to go as fast as possible on it for a whole day. Video: 220.5mph on America Look at the way that thing accelerates Good job there's no bends, as being a yank tank it would have fallen over Not the most exciting video though. Paul
That is one ugly car! Good to see the "Stick Shift" being used. Edited October 25, 2012 by Paul

theduisbergkid
Going fast in a straight line is just so boring.
Andy_Bangle
The 'mericans are it again, last week a modified Ford GT set a new world record for the standing mile in a street-legal car. From a standstill, the twin-turbo powerhouse got up to 283.232 miles per hour in just 5,280 feet, taking Bugatti's previous record. Not so exciting video:
stooH
That's quite a beast 1500 bhp?
Andrew
Surely it can't be long before 300mph is breached.
Andy_Bangle
300mph that's the magic number, the Ford GT project is certainly working towards it: March 2011: 223.42 mph March 2012: 257.7 mph October 2012: 283.232 mph That's quite a beast 1500 bhp? 1700 bhp, so not exactly standard. Andrew
Plus, you listen to all the stuff Bugatti came out with about heat dissipation problems and the £20k set of tyres you need for the speed rating and then this Ford thing comes along and blows it into the weeds without a hint of any of that garb. stooH
I was thinking the same thing, maybe the Bugatti got it all wrong or maybe it's much more stable and usable? Who knows, I still like them though, a marvellous piece of engineering.
Cuprabob
I assume that Ford is a one off special to break the limit and not for general sale whereas the Bugatti was for sale so would need to meet more stringent regulations regarding safety and everyday use. Andy_Bangle
You've got to remember that Veyron development started over 10 years with the first cars hitting the streets in 2005. Plus, it's a lot easier easier / cheaper to take an existing fast car and make it even powerful (eg: AMG, RUF, Hennessey, DMC). G-Power have even built a BMW 1 M Coupé with 592 bhp V8 and a Top Speed of 205 mph, that's more power than many supercars.
garcon magnifique
I think Cuprabob has the obvious point, surely. Bugatti built a high end, luxurious 250mph supercar that does corners and goes thousands of miles between services. These American modded machines are stripped out, hyper tuned street legal dragsters that need an engine rebuild after every few runs.
Andrew
Well, he probably does. Or, now they are German owned, they over engineered it since those that own them will never get anywhere near the limits needed. the fact it came out in 2005 is interesting - I feel quite old after thinking about that! shao_khan
I guess the car in the top film started as a CTS-V Cadillac (I actually quite like the look of them) - just looking on their web site the stock car is 556hp! For pulling power though they are very impressive the rate at which those cars above reach 150mph plus.
Tipex
As above, the difference between the Ford and the Veyron, is that the Veyron will do it's party trick all day, every day, and then happily take you to Tesco on the way home.
