Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG AWD

Those of you paying close attention to the new A-Class will likely have noticed that the A45 AMG's aero kit is identical to the AMG Sport styling package offered on the regular hatchback, with the only true differences between the two coming from the bigger, 18-inch multispoke alloy wheels, the honeycomb grille inserts, and the trapezoidal (instead of oval) tailpipes.

Underneath the body, however, it's a different story as AMG engineers have made some serious modifications to the A250's 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with direct injection and turbocharging technology.

Mercedes-Benz announced earlier this year that the tuned engine would make around 330hp (335PS) and over 295lb ft (400Nm) of peak torque, but now we learn that AMG has managed to drill more power out of the four-banger, which is now rated at 350-horsepower and 332 lb-ft (450Nm).

That's a huge improvement over the A250's 208hp (211PS) and more than the BMW M135i's 315hp (320PS) and the Audi RS3 Sportback's 335hp (340PS).

In the A45, an AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission with dual clutch technology will work together with an all-wheel drive system to transfer power to the road.

The chassis of the five-door hatchback has been reworked and features new suspension and steering system settings and components, wider tracks, reworked electronic aids and stronger brakes.

It's scheduled for a world premiere at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show next March before it goes on sale later in the year, along side he CLA 45 AMG sports sedan with the same powertrain.

The hottest addition to the A-Class family of hatchbacks makes do with a heavily revised version of the brand's 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four petrol rated at 350-horsepower and 332 lb-ft (450Nm) of peak torque.

An AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission with dual clutch technology transfers power to Mercedes' new 4MATIC all-wheel drive system tailored for FWD models (you can read more details here).

In addition, the automaker's engineers have tweaked the chassis of the A45 AMG that features new suspension and steering system settings and components, wider tracks, reworked electronic aids and stronger brakes.

If you're having a hard time telling the A45 AMG apart from the regular A-Class hatchbacks with the AMG Sport styling package, you're not alone, as the differences are limited to the alloy wheel design, the glossy black front lip spoiler and side trims, the twin-bar grille and the trapezoidal (instead of oval) tailpipes.

I think its my next car.

Plenty of things I dont like, but allround probably the best car for me if I replace mine this summer.

I will probably take a risk and stick a deposit down on the assumption that it is going to be good.

It also looks much better in colours other than white!

MB have just released the official figures and now it makes 355hp (360PS) and 332 lb-ft (450Nm), which Mercedes-Benz says makes the 2.0-litre unit "the most powerful series production four-cylinder turbo engine in the world".

Under normal driving conditions, the system uses front-wheel drive, while when required, the variable AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive splits the torque between front and rear axle up to a ratio of 50:50 percent.

The A45 AMG accelerates from zero to 100 km/h (62mph) in 4.6 seconds, while its top speed stands at 250 km/h (electronically limited). The hot hatch returns a combined fuel economy of 6.9 lt/100km, which is equal to 40.9mpg UK.

Among other performance upgrades over the regular A-Class hatch, is the sports suspension, an exclusive 3-stage ESP that can be turned off completely, a speed-sensitive sports steering, a high-performance braking system and twin-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels fitted with 235/40 R 18 tyres.

A few more updates.

A nice YT vid from EVO. I think the car looks subtle in the grey. If it is going to be £36k, its an absolute steal!

So with essential extras, what do you reckon £45k?

It actually has quite a bit as standard (Bi-xenons / 7 speed DCT / privacy glass / AMG sport suspension / sports seats) etc. There are a lot of options to waste money on (e.g. carbon fibre mirror housings £1,230!)

But a few must haves are extra (colours other than Red or white £570 / mirror folding & dimming £310 / heated seats £300 / 19" £615 / hands free £360) .....but I reckon I could get by with £40k.

Tech Specs are impressive! 360hp / 450NM / 0-62 4.6s / 155 limited / 1555kg / 161 g/km emissions / Fuel Consumption U32.1 EU48.7 C40.9

I'm not sure what Merc are playing at.

The deals that I am being emailed from contract hire firms for pretty much all models are just plain stupid.

Today's:

Merc CLS (ie a brand new model) 250cdi AMG Sport with Command and other bits for £400 per month! It is a £55k car!!

They must be really struggling on the sales front and shoving them into the lease market so that no one knows how cheaply they are giving them away for.

Average around 40k/year.

Just interested to see how much cheaper they'd be to lease from than someone like Cab Direct, I know they will have the clause, but you can often get around it by going private hire and telling them it's for chauffeur work, or simply just not telling them at all, none of the local dealers care so long as they get the servicing work, it's a kind of 'don't ask, don't tell' arrangement usually.
