Suj85
Hi Guys, Just recently bought a 2003 D3 A8 with Keyless start and go with one-touch fingerprint memory - but I'm having trouble registering fingerprints. The keyless system works fine. When I walk up to the car with the keys in my pocket and go to pull the door handle the car unlocks immediately before. The start-button starts the car (although I get "User not recognised" on the DIS). The stop button also works properly. But when I try to register a user I get an error. When I follow the MMI steps: Car -> User -> Select User -> Select fingerprint to scan, I immediately get the error "Transmission error. Please try again". I've also noticed that when I try to enable one-touch memory by going to Car -> Systems -> Seat adjustment -> Driver's seat -> and set "one-touch memory" to "on", it immediately switches back to "off". I am able to set "Remote control key" to "on" and "off" just fine. The car has been updated to 5570: I believe this will have been done by the dealer as the car has FASH - all at the same dealership. It has suffered from the typical 5570 updates I've read about - Inustrment cluster, battery meter, Oil level and Service interval have all disappeared from the menu. I plan to get these back once I get access to VCDS. At present I do not have access to VCDS so have not been able to check for fault codes. I've read about the 5570 updating the coding for the fingerprint to the newer version which causes the older version to stop working properly - not sure if this is the case here? - seeFingerprint starter button not working | Page 2 | Audi Forum andFingerprint sensor | Audi Forum. I tried to get to the hidden green menu but it didn't work. I haven't done an MMI reset yet, or tried disconnecting the battery. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I should begin without access to VCDS? TIA

PsYcHe
You really need a VCDS scan to get any kind of direction to check.. could be a simple coding issue, sometimes happens after an update.
Suj85
This is what I am hoping the issue is based on what little I've managed to find on the net it's feasible. After playing around with the key memory setting and doing an MMI reset I noticed the other day my electric steering column adjustment has stopped working too - it was working fine before this. I've read somewhere of a diagnostic test being available in VCDS where it will create some random values for the memory system then apply them enabling us to see if the memory seats, climate, column etc are all functioning. Anyone got info on how to run this?
pat27
I had a similar issue with mine, I bought another finger print reader but it turned out to be the module under the passenger seat, the garage removed it and refitted it and its all working fine now. Finger print reader for sale.... Not sure where you are based, but its worth checking out if theres a good independant VAG nearby.Thoroughly recommend Autotechnica in Hull. Suj85
Thanks for the reply. I'm in Manchester - there are a couple of places that show up on Google, one is "Vag Technik", Awesome GTi and another called "Vag Manchester". Did they explain what removing it and refitting it did? Was it the same as disconnecting the battery for a little bit would have done?
pat27
I'm not 100% certain.I bought a working reader which they fitted but it didn't work on my car, they then removed and refitted the module and it worked, they then refitted my original reader (which hadn't worked for a year) and it worked!. I seem to recall that when I had a battery changed there was an awful lot of fault codes that had to be reset! Why not have a trip to Hull for shopping and let them have a look at your car ? (They charge circa £45 per hour and the owner was an Audi master technician ) If I haven't sold the reader by then, they could always try it on your car. Did you buy the reader new from Audi ? How much if you don't mind me asking?
pat27
No the Audi price for a New one was somewhere in the region of £260 if I remember correctly.
paulrstaylor
Having used both VagTechnik and Awesome GTi over the last 10 years I would recommend VagTechnik now. Awesome have grown massively since I first used them, however along with their nice waiting room comes a big increase in prices too. VagTechnik only have two ramps, but their hourly rate is good and the guy who runs it is ex-Audi and knows his stuff.....
paulrstaylor
Should have said, if you just want the codes reading/clearing drop me a PM, I have VCDS and VAS-PC so may be able to help out if your not to far away.....

VagTechnik only have two ramps, but their hourly rate is good and the guy who runs it is ex-Audi and knows his stuff..... I've never used Awesome before but they seem to have a good enough rep. I also remember when they were smaller, they're huge now. Should have said, if you just want the codes reading/clearing drop me a PM, I have VCDS and VAS-PC so may be able to help out if your not to far away..... That would be fantastic! I know my way around VCDS and have done some research on the various modules and what they should be etc. I plan on buying VCDS next month (only got the car 2 weeks ago so have been told I have to wait til next month now ). I don't appear to be able to send (and I guess receive) PMs yet - guess I haven't been registered long enough and/or there's a minimum post count. Any other way to get in touch with you ? This seems to be a great forum Edited November 23, 2012 by Suj85

darrenjoe90
did you get your fingerprint working as mine also does the same ? would love to know how to get it sorted.
Suj85
Sorry forgot to update thread. The good news is I did get it working and it's a great feature. The bad news is I don't really know why it started working. All I can say is I kept using it even whilst it wasn't recognising anything. I decided one night to try and scan my print in and out of nowhere it began to work. Scanned in 3 people and has worked ever since. I have since acquired VCDS. I did a fault code scan, nothing showed up for the fingerprint scanner. I'll post up what my settings in the green menu are. Has yours ever worked? How long have you had the car? did you get your fingerprint working as mine also does the same ? would love to know how to get it sorted.

Suj85
If you have VCDS check for faults and see if one has been logged? When you say not working do you mean it won't recognise prints but are still able to enter the "add new person" screens? Interesting, as mine has stopped working again. One day it was working, and the next day it had stopped!
darrenjoe90
When i bought my car early last year it had the details of the previous owner stored in it. I tried to store my fingerprint details and it always came up with an error. I keep thinking it would be a good idea to reset the module so there is no details stored in there and then i can start again. Every time i start it just says "user unknown"
pat27
Did have mine scanned but no faults are stored. I can not access 'add new persons' screen. The only thing I get is 'Transmission error' .
