Paul
What an awful clunky, disjointed operating system. I have just replaced the parents pc, and while i wanted Windows 7, a Windows 8 model came up at the right price with a cracking spec. It looks like i will be spending most of my efforts making it operate like Windows 7, and switching its quirky options off. It strikes me its built for touch screens and just does not work with desktops. Its early days, but I cannot see me warming or changing to it anytime soon. CarMad
Yep spot on I've done a few of the relatives machines now as they all just don't get on with Windows 8, I can easily see them reverting back to the win 7 view in Windows 9 or at least evolving it for none touch devices. They tried and IMO failed, other elements are better though its not all bad which is why I didn't move them back to win7.
Tipex
I've been getting along with it ok, but on a laptop the 'apps' screen is somewhat pointless and you end up just switching to the desktop anyway, which of course, is somewhat pared down compared to other versions of Windows. Is there a way of making it more like 7?

Paul
Thats one of the free options I've seen mentioned. I have also seen a $5 app that's called Start8 that getting good reviews. I just need it simple and easily navigatable for my parents light web use.
Torino101
I loathe Win 8 - have tried my best to like it, and given it a fair crack. (2 months usage), but it manages to irritate me daily. Bring back Win 7.......
Paul
I gave up. I have been using Windows for years, but constantly having to google how to get things done, I have invested in Start8 for $5, and have commenced changing it back to as close to Win7 as i can get. If i was struggling to open, close, navigate the thing, my parents have no chance. Microsoft seriously need to return the start button/menu, and return the X to close pages. stooH
I put it on our home PC and the wife hates it, i'm constantly getting questions about simple things like "How do I print?", "How do I attach a document to an email?" they've hidden everything they can and removed options from things that used to be there. Fecking frustrating.
Paul
I can highly recommend Start8 if you want to revert back to Windows 7 style. $5 , circa £3.20 with paypal. You would not know it was Windows 8 machine now. Start8 intergrates seemlessly. It has become part of the OS, rather than an add on. Tick a few checkboxes on Start8, Swap out the dreadful mail client for another, bring back quick launch toolbars, and your done. While i wouldnt buy Win8 I am happy now it can be modified to where i could easily and hapilly use it.
Waylander
I likewise have put start8 on the netbook which the wife mostly uses. The biggest issues I had was that netbook screen resolution was below that the Metro Apps needs so that screen would load but was otherwise unusable and initally whenever I desktop I tried to open a pic etc it would by default try to use the Metro app and fail - you can of course manually set it to use another (win8) prog to open as normal. I understand MS have caved and the "Blue" update of Win8 will have boot to desktop and Start button back. Admittedly I personally didn't mind the lack of a start button if the Metro apps would run may not have bothered wth start8 but as it is I now have a pretty nippy netbook
