Moto GP goes to BT for next 5 years

Fecking hell, what an awful decision.

It was bad enough when Eurosport lost the rights to show it live but at least they still had a fantastic commentary team so I didn't mind waiting a few hours to watch it.

I'll wait and see what the options are for BT Sport.

Eurosport coverage is so good with the commentary team they have, that like said earlier, waiting a while to watch it is no hardship. Their in depth analysis, history and technical knowledge is unsurpassed in my view. I follow all three of them on Twitter. Unless that changes I'll not watch it anywhere else.

When it looked like Eurosport would lose the coverage all together a couple of years back, I emailed Eurosport to complain. When it was reversed, I received an email form Julian Ryder saying, ta!

I often end up watching on Eurosport as two young kids means you don't always do things you want! hehehe

This apparently impacts Eurosport too.

Are Eurosport losing the coverage then?

There are a lot of BT cutomers out there that will access the sport for free but as you say, you'll need Sky aswell. It's making people jump through hoops to get something that was free (on BBC, with the TV licence) like Sky with F1. At least BBC show most of the F1 races live or later (not sure for how long). I'm very surprised Dorna aren't offering any other service apart from BT. I'm not sure there are enough people out there, who by changing to BT to watch MotoGP are going to make any difference to them. It's not that big a sport.

This is a shame and I suspect viewing figures will drop significantly. I was hoping Eurosport would keep some sort of highlights deal, but it appears not at this moment in time. You can always view the races via the Dorna website for about €100 for the season.

So now you have to buy Sky, a TV license, ESPN, Sky 2 and a BT box and their broadband.

Anyone else get the feeling that people will give up with all these and sport will suffer as a result?

Depends what you want to watch, I guess. I thought if you were a BT or Virgin tv customer most of Sky channels were available?

I have avoided going for Sky direct because I don't want to subsidise Satan's spawn, but I'll probably now go for a BT deal to get BT Sport and may add the main Sky Sports channels. I'm guessing that might not include Sky Sports F1 ... I'll make do without that. Prefer the BBC's F1 coverage anyway.

I think BT do have Sky F1, but not HD and Sky only let other providers show Sky Sports 1 & 2. Not sure if they then put all the good games on 3 & 4.

I priced up getting Sky  and begrudge paying them so much just for a few sports channels. I have no need for the other 500. Except maybe Atlantic.

You really are missing out. The channel is fantastic and the coverage is aimed at the informed fan without being exclusive in its approach.

..... and here in New Zealand - we have no rights at all. The world is changing. The countries above have s hite internet therefor get the cheap TV deals. Developed countries are being screwed.

I watch MotoGp.com cos its the only alternative so in the end Dorna win here.

Any other country like the UK (with internet) is subject to the highest bidder with access to the home TV channel..

Next year is World superbike then BSB and any other sport. In the end it'll be down to watching the sport you like but god help the minority sports.

seriously.... if you dont like this deal.... Watch Mototgp.com.... its a great product. I've subscribed for 3 yrs. Lots of material and archives etc. Its worth it.

Ordered BT Sport tonight. As a bt broadband customer already, got it free and as I've ordered it before August, I get the HD free for a year too. It's already downloaded to my sky box and I'm currently watching. Easy.

Not sure if it will work on both my boxes but about to find out!

Just posting a repeat of rumours from someone in the trade :

"The ONLY real ( ? ) advantage to BT account holders at the moment is the GP stuff.. but as there is now a BIG lawsuit apparently about to start over that debacle I suspect one of a few things will have to happen

BT will have to increase costs to consumer to cover the legal bills ( It is likely to go on for a long time .. It has been muted that the case will be kept on the boil for the life of the BT / DORNA contract )

BT will allow DORNA to show the races on a dedicated on line service ( probably at a lower but similar cost )

BT will back down and reduce costs to UK viewers who are not BT customers

The legal battle is based on the EU laws governing monopoly of a service or product being sold on by a third party

In other words, as I understand it, DORNA them selves are not breaking the rules as they are the intellectual owners ( which quite frankly seems absurd ), but BT are as they refuse to be resellers 'at a reasonable cost to a third party'

All this seems to be little more than rumour at the moment but given how pissed off a whole RAFT of companies and individuals are at BT it could well be based on fairly solid ground"

Interesting. I was looking to stay with BT broadband as moving would then mean spending £12 p/m to get MotoGP. Nothing quite like watching it live though. Isn't there a clause which states there must be some form of free to air package?
