Car serviced by Audi every 20 000 miles . Gear box oil changed every 40 0000. So, yes to both questions.

Car now done 143000 miles.its an A6 Le Mans S-line 2.7 tdi.

What did u mean by upped to the 7-8 clutches . Sorry am not very good with tech lingo.

thinking about it, your car should already have the latest gearbox.  The early CVT offerings had 6 clutches (in the gearbox) and these were not enough!  They upped the design to 7 to cope with more power & torque, with less failures.

Audi 'should' offer you some goodwill as the car is serviced and upto date.  Talk to them about it.

Do you know the exact issue with the gearbox?

But where in a CVT box would a plate be?

I can understand them in a normal slush box auto, or a DSG type box, as they still contain individual gears, a CVT doesn't have any gears whatsoever, so no need for any plates/clutches etc.

If you do a quick search on Audi multitronic gearboxes, you'll find lots of mention of plates.  Audi went from a 6 plate design to 7 to try to fix this issue.

It's 5 years and 143k miles old... I'm sure they'd, quite rightly, laugh him out of the showroom if he asked for a contribution!

Is it actually a CVT box then? Such as the Prius, with no perceptible gear changes? Just a constant rpm from the engine when you accelerate, no revs rising in accordance with road/gear speed?

So you floor it, revs go to say 5k RPM and stay there while the car picks up speed until you back off at any speed.

How does it have any kind of plates/clutches in it then?

Unless my understanding of how a CVT box works is fundamentally wrong, it wont have any.

Edit to add, Ok i've just read that link, apparently it does have plates/clutches, I stand corrected!

Friend had a Discovery, +120k miles, full dealer service history.  Water pump failed, known problem.

He got new engine and hire car costs covered by Land Rover.

It could be argued that Audi should cover it.

Legal cover on house contents?

Suspect the water pump had a replacement schedule due to it being driven by the same belt as the cam belt. Which is why a dealer would have to replace at that kind of mileage.

I forgot to ask the OP if...........

you can still use the gears with the car. ie, using it manually, moving the stick to the + & - areas.

I'm confused again, how does a CVT box have 'gears' and + & - on it?

The whole point of a CVT box is that it doesn't have any gears and is Continuously Variable, and therefore theoretically has an infinite number 'gears' hence it's name?

Haha!  The Audi Multronic thingy also has set gearing that you can paddle up and down with.

The multitronic does indeed have what's called a 'clutch pack.' You do not need a new box!! This will be one of two things IMO. Either the aforementioned clutch pack (a replacement cost fitted of around £1k) or the ECU which is about £700 fitted. Audi will always say 'new box sir' because they don't want the grief and it's easier to just replace the whole thing. Bare in whoever does the job MUST take the car to a main dealer to have the new component linked to the car. Afaik, only dealers can do this.

It's quite clever. In tiptronic mode, for each gear you select, the ECU adjusts the revs to mimick a proper auto box. It's exactly the same feel/experience as a standard auto, just quicker. Edited by drpellypo
