Doodles2408
So I've had my Gorgeous fully kitted out Tiguan sport for 5 and a bit years now, it's got a full service history and I've been a loyal customer with my local dealership Crewe VW, however it's been due it's service and I've been dreading taking it in because the last time it went in I was told that the steering rack was faulty and the break pads and discs were 80% worn so you can in again the cost of the steering rack was £1400 the pads £239 the minor service £199 and the MOT £45 plus I needed 2 new tyres £300+ a hell of a lot of money so I looked a changing the car couldn't find what I wanted, so booked it in praying there would be nothing more. In the mean time I spoke toy regular tyre fitter who I mentioned by chance that I had to get the service and MOT done, and he asked why I was going to a main dealer, my reply, well they look after me give me a discount and so on, so I told him what was wrong with the car and he suggested getting a second opinion, and another quote for the work. So I did took it to a fab garage In Winsford they did the service £110 MOT £45 but what got me more that the saving on the service was the fact that the car passed, my car was perfect there were NO FAULTS my break pads were fine my steering rack was perfect. He said my car was a fabulous vehicle and in great shape all I needed was laser alignment which I new. I was completely shocked. Now hears the thing today I would have took my car into VW Crewe I would have took their word for it and spent money I didn't have, how many times over the last 5 years have I done that already. I will be contacting VW directly as I am disgusted and I am sorely tempted to contact the media. My husbands car is still under warrantee but he will be asking to see in the workshop for him self from now on any faults they claim are on the car. I'm shocked. Torino101
Why does this come as NO shock to me whatsoever. As soon as my warranty expires I always go to independents for servicing, not main stealers.
Rachel
None of my VWs or Porsches get/got serviced at the dealer. Poor workmanship, gouging prices and behaviour that is just dishonest in some cases... I have a very good independent take care of mine, and as they always use new VAG/Porsche parts and do a proper manufacturer (book) service, warranty is not affected. Might be different in the UK, but it is illegal for dealers/manufacturers to lock in after sales servicing here. E-bmw
It is the same here too & has been for a few years, but most people don't know it, or chose to do otherwise. The only real issue that the car manufacturers can use in their arsenal now is that the use of "goodwill gestures" outside of warranty is not normal when independants are used but CAN for MDSH cars. NewNiceMrMe
Brake pads could still be 80% worn. The dealer wasn't necessarily fibbing. Just because the independent says they're fine doesn't mean there is more than 20% left in them. If I was you I'd challenge them on the steering rack point though. I would be a little wary of just taking the independents words for it. It is a very odd thing for them to highlight as requiring replacement if it doesn't. There are a lot of other things they'd pick before it (if they were trying to scam you), surely? Edited March 29, 2014 by NewNiceMrMe
Calm Chris
Funny one time ever post this. The tyres will still need sorting, the indie just did a service and mot, ok the service was cheaper than a main dealers prices no surprise there. The rack is still an issue The brakes are still worn, they likely work very well at 80% worn- but soon (depending of driving style) the brakes sensors will alarm and they will need doing. VW offer fixed price stuff on old cars full brake change with fluid is about £500, most indies using vw parts will be a modest £50 cheaper, and only if pushed. So I'm not sure what the complaint is other than the discovery that main dealers are more expensive on certain things, and maybe more proactive in pointing out defects on the car? M8CKN
My mums Eos was in for a new mirror at the dealer yesterday and they did one of their complimentary health checks. All tyres recorded as 5mm internal edge, middle and external edge, yet they recommended the tracking be checked Edited March 29, 2014 by M8CKN

patently
Ask them to pop it on a lift and show you the worn pads and the iffy rack...
cruiser647
Have the pads ever been changed? Surely at 5 yrs old they'll need doing soon? Also, you should be able to afford things like brake pads/servicing etc. Yes, the steering rack would be a big whack, but the other stuff is just routine for car ownership.
