Waylander
I think my front tyres need replacing imminently. Recommendations of where to buy 225/50/17 run-flats?

Waylander
Cheers. £145 a pop! I used to be able to get 2 and a bit for that price
cruiser647
Do you want the run-flats? I don't know anybody on here that likes them nor keeps them on their car? However, not sure what other people do in the case of a puncture.
Calm Chris
Cost co do them I think.
Waylander
Costco currently currently offering £75 back if you order 4 Michelin tyres)will have a look there too
garcon magnifique
Perfectly happy with my runflats, have replaced rears with same and will shortly be doing the same with the fronts. I'm convinced if I hadn't had runflats I'd have had to shell out for at least two new alloys by now.
drpellypo
The X5 came with run flats all round. The first thing I did was change them all to standard. Transformed the car. Ride was horrid with them.

Twinspark
I swear they attract punctures, as I've had 2 since having runflats, but did about 200k miles pre runflats without getting one.
eldavo69
Oponeo are sometimes cheap too, otherwise Camskill
drpellypo
Have you tried your local place? I've always found, without exception, them to be much cheaper than any online supplier once you factor in fitting the tyre plus balancing, valves etc.

I've always found, without exception, them to be much cheaper than any online supplier once you factor in fitting the tyre plus balancing, valves etc. In this case the local place was cheaper its own online quote even! Decided I would give the Hankooks a whirl. I was shocked how badly the driver side front has deteriorated so needed at least a couple PDQ. Cheapest = Camskill at £142 each plus delivery. (~£290 all in) Place I used to use charging £162 fitted Rang them and they said they have to order them in and will do me 2 for £304 fitted
cruiser647
Why has the drivers side deteriorated? Might have an issue there.
Waylander
I am sure I do. Both driver side tyres much worse than passenger side which has a moderate amount of tread still. drive is fine but will ask garage to have a look
NewNiceMrMe
Tracking/laser alignment required?
Waylander
I thought so but I thought tracking meant it judders at speed? will get it checked anyway
Waylander
Going to slap 2 new ones on the rear and swap the rear passenger to front driver. Then will change the other 2 and do a front-rear swap.
NewNiceMrMe
True, I don't know in all honesty. Techy/mechanical stuff on cars just isn't me. I would be surprised if it is anything more. I guess it could be a track rod wotsit or bearing?
Waylander
There is also a "something is loose" sound but that is from passenger rear wheelarch region. Not sure. Will get it slapped onto a ramp and looked at Tuesday Edited May 24, 2014 by Waylander
NewNiceMrMe
Out of interest, do you ever hear a clunk from the rear wheel area? I ask because that model is known for springs going bang in the same way the E46 M3's were. The 5 series range of that era had the issue too. They're cheap to replace and make a massive difference. That could very well impact tyre wear (it certainly hits the ride).
Waylander
Nope. I never even heard this rattle from the wheelarch from inside the cabin. Son told me when i dropped him off recently and then when i opened windows when idling I heard it.
NewNiceMrMe
Hmm. Put the windows down and drive slowly, very slowly, over a speed bump or ramp. It'll be a short clunk if it is a spring. It took me ages to realise it on mine. You do see a slight change in the stance of the car but you have to look very, very closely on flat ground. Tipex
Wheel/tyre balancing makes the judder, tracking/alignment wont, but i'd be surprised if poor alignment took out both tyres on one side. It is possible of course, but would tend to indicate a more serious underlying problem, such as previous accident damage. It could simply be because a previous owner had a series of punctures, and didn't replace tyres on the same axle at the same time, and i'd suggest this is the most likely explanation. Are the front/rears swappable? Some BMW's have different sizes front to rear.
