New M6

Sorry MrMe - I know you loved yours, but I could never get on with the previous 6 shape, thought it was never right and hoped one day it would grow on me but it didn't and found it a sacrilege compared to the original 6 which was a fantastic coupe in its day.

The new 6 however for me is spot on from any angle, huge presence and a stunning car. +++

I'm exactly the same school of thought as you Torino. Didn't like the previous shape (that boot!) but live the current model - so I bought one!

I know what you mean about the rear MrMe - the lower half is a bit boring. Someone has done something about it though. I'm toying with the idea of getting it done:

I would only do the back end (oo-er!).

The rear valance looks much better.  I still think the car is a bit too bland for the segment it occupies and the price.

I think the front could have been a bit more edgey and they should have widened the arches a little.

I'm going to be looking at what the sales figures of it are when they're out in July.

In 2013, after it's first year, BMW reported sales up from 10,000 units (old model) to 14,000 units (new model).  They said it with a fanfare that wasn't greeted with as much enthusiasm by the press because they very obviously pointed out the old model had been around 7 years and 4,000 extra units for a car that had been seeing its sales figures drop in the last 2 years of production wasn't epic.  In fact the 2011 figures for the out-going car were 12,500 - so only 1,500 behind the brand new car.

It is a lovely car all-in though and Boosters model is exactly the right engine choice in my opinion.  We're still unimpressed with the mpg we get out of the same unit in the X6, but it is such a silky and powerful unit you soon forget that BMW have lied through their teeth about what you might get from it economy wise.

The previous 6 grew on me - helped by seeing plenty of NNMM's on the odd trip north. Although Clarkson had it spot on about the soft top roof - "It looks like a tramp's hat!"

The new model is better looking, more rounded perhaps, but with that (as NNMM says) a tad bland. Also tend to agree the rear is a little bit fussy, but that's nit-picking.  The standard 6 is a very sophisticated GT, different to an XK or CL inside but no less luxurious, and I think about right for the price point (given the deals you can find).  The M6 enters into altogether different category.  You're probably over £100k with a bit of spec., easily into 911, R8 and lightly used Bentley GT territory.

That sums it up for me.+++

As technically superb as the M6 is, and the monster performance it offers, I'd take a new 991 with a very good spec or a used Bentley every day of the week.

The R8 wouldn't be a contender for me.  The M6 is probably a better all rounder and the R8 looks a bit squat.  As impressed as I was when I drove one, it still felt like it was inferior to the 911.

The GT is just such a special car though.  Or rather, an event.
