Mo-S3
Currently running 255 40 19 and they have about 3-4mm still on them at the most but wanted to ask if these pirelli p zero's get really noisy when the tread starts running low. Trying to eliminate whether i have noisy tyres or bearings. Feel like all the noise is coming from up front
Cuprabob
I run 235/35x19s P Zeros on my Scirocco and I would say they were noisy, however on the rear of some VAG cars tyres wear abnormally making them noisier as they wear. Treadstepping and Sawtooth wear is pretty common and the symptom is a drone/rumbling similar to a dodgy wheel bearing. cruiser647
The Pirelli P Zeros can be noisy as they wear. My mate has them on his A6, and they do get loud. I know the SportContact conti 2 & 3's were very noisey as they wore down. But the 5's are good.
NewNiceMrMe
I'm not convinced, but only because you've said something else - the bearings. I ran Pirelli's for many years on a number of cars and can't say I ever noticed they were noisier than others (though granted it was a good while ago). However, I did have very noisy bearings on my MGF (it was shit) and when they were replaced it was very different. I thought it was the tyres for a good while. Mo-S3
Im only 'saying' bearings because it sounds very noisy and wouldn't personally expect worn tyres to be so noisy. But then again bearings should not go on a 12 plate A6 BiTdi Avant !!
PeterS
The rear tyres on our A3 suffered from the effect that Cuprabob mentioned - it really did sound like the wheel bearings had gone. New tyres sorted it; perhaps you can swap front to rears to see if it makes any difference? At least it won't cost you anything to try!
Calm Chris
Wheel bearings tend to be noises at certain speeds. The duff one on the Audi was only noticeable noise wise at 35-45mph, below or above that it was silent. It would be rare for both fronts to go at the same time, is the noise on one side or both? Mo-S3
Might be a bit pointless swapping backs to front as they are equally worn. Looks they have been rotated during their life so pretty much all round equal wear. Noise is both sides and dont sound different at varying speeds just same noise constantly
cruiser647
Try a different brand when you change. I think the Conti 5s are good, as are the Michelins. However, I have a pair of Potenza's in the garage for my next fitment, I wasn't impressed with the Goodyear tyres I had before.
garcon magnifique
My only real experience with Pirellis is that the P Zeros were a lot quieter than Dunlop SPs on my Impreza STI. After a few k the Dunlops sounded like the bearings were going. Only concern with the P Zeros was they seemed to be wearing bloody quickly. Mo-S3
ok i think im going to go with the tyre replacement. Thinking of the Michelin Pilot Sports or the Dunlop Maxx Gt's. Is it ok to have two different brands on the car? ie michelin on front and dunlops on rear? All would be similar tread depth
NewNiceMrMe
I had a variant of Dunlop Maxx on the 6 series all-round when I switched from RF's. I was quite impressed with the grip they offered but the obvious counter to that was the lesser life.
Cuprabob
Different brands front to rear is not an issue. Of the 2 tyres proposed, I would go Michelin Super Sports. Tney get exvellent reviews. I have had Dunlop SportMaxx tyres in the past and didn't really like them but the GTs might be better. Tyre performance is so subjective, car dependant and personal opinion. NewNiceMrMe
Sportmaxx. That's what I had on the 6.
Rachel
My rocketship XKR had the Dunlop Sportmaxx rubber, and they suited the car very well. My C63 has ContiSportContact 5P rubber, and again really suits the car, but I'll replace them with with Michelin SuperSports or Yoko AdvanSport V105s... (as Contis in Oz are hideously expensive)
Mo-S3
Valuable opinions thank you. Lets see what i can find as im not planning on keeping the car too long.
Tipex
Am I missing something, or are you replacing all 4 tyres? If so, I don't understand why you'd fit two different brands? It's always better to have matching tyres all round if possible.
Mo-S3
No your not missing anything and yes im replacing all 4 tyres but looking at getting some part worn ones with at least 6mm tread still on them. have sourced a few but not a matching good set. part worns because im not sure how long i will be keeping the car. patently
Oooh, part-worns. Luckily there is no chance of a disagreement erupting here over those
cruiser647
Oooh, part-worns. Luckily there is no chance of a disagreement erupting here over those Just get some part-worn no-brand with lots of tread. But only when you are ready to sell, privately. However, if selling to a dealer, run the tyres to 1.6 mm, they won't care and it won't affect the price.

Mo-S3
Problem is the current pirellis are not far off from the wear indicator so whilst i still have it for the next few months i may as well get some peace from the noise they seem to be making
cruiser647
In which case Falkens might do. Good, but not Conti/Michelin good and relatively cheap?
Rachel
Actually Falkens are greatly under rated. I had them on the race tweaked C4S, and they were superb.
E-bmw
Have used their 451s & 452s before myself with pretty good results, also Barum Bravuris 11, and Kumho KH11 are pretty good.
