During the 'heatwave' last week, I noticed a really disproportionately high number of broken down cars on the hard shoulders of the A1

Not flat tyres, as the bonnets were up and people were sitting on the fences or on the sunny grass verges waiting.

Some were fairly decent looking cars and not all of them were bangers.  The newest one IIRC, was a 03 Vx of some sort.

I was really surprised.

Got me thinking about when cars started to gain massive reliability and if the number of breakdowns was mainly due to poor/lack of maintenance?
