Upon recommendation I bought a fuel additive called cataclean for my 100k A8. Was a bit apprehensive in chucking this into the tank but pleased that I did. The product is meant to give the entire system the equivalent of a colonic irrigation. I've noticed a slight increase in the pick up already, the silken engine runs even smoother (I'm sure its not my imagination) and I'm off for a long run tomorrow so I'll report if it helps the MPG. got it from www.shopamerica.co.uk. I've also put it into the missus's oil burner 4x4 with simlar effects (and cut down on the smoking) (the car not me lol ) jump.gif

I have ordered it already!

Went to get some Millers Petrol Additive over the weekend, but the shop was shut on Sunday (for some reason - usually open). So I could not AND it shuts at 5.30 pm during the week - so no chance of me getting there!

I find the Redex stuff etc, does not do much.

Will let you know what happens.

Must be explosive stuff! FIREdevil.gif

They cannot ship it, but maybe we can!!!! Should be able to send it via SURFACE MAIL, incase the low pressure in the air plane hold on the very long trip to Amsterdam does it in.

Let me know if you want some, and I'll get some and send it. (Fair swap for your exhaust I think!!! grin.gif)

Only kidding!

My car has done nearly 200K miles, so I might benefit!

However, I have noticed in a previous car, that they do make a difference. I had an Omega TD (2.5 BMW 6 Cylinder) and it made a difference in that. Less smoke on kick-down etc etc.

However, engine manuals always say don't use anything. Just to cover their own backs, if it goes wrong.

We'll see what difference it makes!

I heard the (Chevron) injector cleaner even helped to cure misfiring on two occasions, so... (are we paying attention?)

I'm just more confident about premium brands, never heard of this one, and the cat-cleaning part sounds a bit like 'magic' to me, IYKWIM. wink.gif

Got it, and stuck it all in on just under half a tank. Then proceeded to 'drive normally'. Done another 10 miles - some with a bit of redlining - to get the stuff mixed and flowing. Still amazes me on the rapidness and quietness of this car! grin.gif Wonder what people think when this big old beastie comes hurtling past at 3 er 2 figures!

Will let you know if this stuff does anything - although there will be some psycological bollokcs going on in my head saying IT HAS WORKED, whatever the results!!!!!

Got a trip up north (M1 all the way - so cruise will be on) on Saturday all being well, so will see if the MPG has improved, less judder, better acceleration ices_blah.gifices_blah.gif

Oh - chuffing crap design bottle - spilt some down the side of the car! These things NEVER fit in the tank properly. sportifs2.gifopenfire.gif

Well, results so far are encouraging.

I went up North for the long weekend, cruised up their via the M1 (until blocked by accident at MK, and then up the A1 instead). Usually come to a few roundabouts and the car would want to stall (occasionally suceeding). This time it did not. Did not stall at all, not on the way back neither. 169144-ok.gif

The revs did drop a bit, and stutter a bit about 500, but no lower

Maybe the stuff has worked OK!

Will keep an eye on things tho!

  • 4 years later...

I purchased Cataclean and put it into my wife Audi A4. We did not see any difference at first so after month put some more in, the car then started to become sluggish. Did some research on the web and came across this so BEWARE the British advertising company tested the product

Best Direct also typed in the guy name who is a director of this company and he has ties to Tim Johnston who did a fuel additive scam in NZ and Australia – Wasted my money on a Scam – the Advertising Boards findings

The ASA considered that the claims of Cataclean were misleading.

1. No evidence was presented to substantiate the claimed change in engine or vehicle performance.

2. No evidence was presented to substantiate a significant change in fuel consumption.

3. One of the chassis dynamometer tests for Cataclean showed that it had a potentially significant reduction but did not support the claimed 60% reduction in exhaust emissions. The other chassis dynamometer test was conducted on a car with an allegedly badly functioning three-way catalyst.

4. No evidence was presented to substantiate the claim that Cataclean cleaned the internal parts of an engine.

Action

We concluded that the infomercial breached rules 5.1 (Misleading advertising), 5.2.1 (Evidence), 5.4.4 (Testimonials) and 5.2.6 (Environmental claims) of the CAP (Broadcast) TV Advertising Standards Code and it must not be advertised again without adequate substantiation for each claim it made.
