Paul
My laptop has a spare slot that i can use to top up the memory... I have 256Mb, and i can top it up to 768Mb so can i use any old 512Mb memory with the following spec? 512Mb DDR SDRAM (PC2100) (details off Laptop) or are laptops more fussy on what they use manufacturer wise? places like Crucial and Kingston do not list my laptop on their websites... Cheers
russellfray
Past experience tells me they are VERY fussy. I had three Dell laptops, all similar spec but slightly different models. The RAM physically fitted all three, but would only work in the unit it was originally fitted in. Other brands may or may not be as picky, but it's definitely the case for Dell (or atleast it was about a year ago!). Russ.
Paul
Hmm, i have found one manufaturer that lists the memory for this laptop and its £80 for 512Mb stick. was wondering if it was worth going for an Ebay of joy bargain... (hence the any old manufacturer) maybe not then?
russellfray
I wouldn't recommend it... depends whether you fancy the thrill of risking it or not
shao_khan
Does memory not need to be in matching pairs these days?
LukeX
No - don't need matching pairs in most laptops. As for Crucial - send them an e-mail and they'll tell you what you need. At least that way if it doesn't work (unlikely!) they are happy to take it back.
