cjshutts
I need to change the front brakes on my 98 A8 which has the Lucas dual piston setup, has anyone done this, and can describe a procedure? Thanks
cruiser647
I have never done this on an A8, but I have done it blind on a few other cars and seems OK to do. Usually have to look around it first for a while and try to figure out what comes off first. There were some on eBay the other day, but I did not get them! Not too much help I know, but something to start on. www.audipages.com is no good on this one (for a change), as the Euro spec cars came with the dual piston set-up, whilst the American ones had the big caliper with 1 piston. Sven
That's with the 4 pads no? Haven't done those, but maybe the attached pic helps... IIRC PaulW just did these. eBay
audia8s2
Absolute piece of cake, 20 mins per side, start to finish. I will try and find a diagram for you. If your only changing pads and not discs (although I would recommend doing both, as everytime I've tried to cut corners and do the pads alone, they squeal like pigs!!!, spend the extra 100 quid and put new discs on). Disconnect the brake pad wear sensor and make sure it's out the way. On the back of the caliper, top and bottom, there is a Torx head (can't remember what size off the top of my head) bolt, undo these and hey presto the front caliper will pull straight out towards you, you can then just pull the pads off (you don't need to undo the little star head bolt that's on the front pads. You will be able to do the same with the pads on the piston side, these are just pushed on (I normally hang the piston from one of the track rod arms on a bit of wire, so it doesn't strain the brake lines, whilst I'm cleaning the calipers up). If you are taking the whole caliper bracket off to change the discs as well, it's simply a case of undoing the two hex bolts. No probs. Just make sure everything's clean, bit of copper grease where the sides of the pad back plate rest on the calipers and jobs done.
cjshutts
Thanks a lot for the note. If you have the diagram I would appreciate it. I think I am th only one to attempt this on US soil!
