Drillslinger
OK, time to bring this one up again It's time (again) to replace discs and pads on my TQ. I have been using the ATE Powerdiscs, and while they were an improvement over std in the wet, the dry performance wasn't THAT much better. So I'm thinking of going with the Brembo (std size) discs, thing is, I've noticed that with the slotted discs, I get an annoying feedback when braking hard. If I went to drilled discs, this wouldn't be an issue, but I keep reading about how NOT to get drilled discs due to potential cracking, etc. So... to my question, has anyone here actually experienced cracked discs due to fast-road applications?? I drive about 95% autobahn, but that also means I do a lot of 200 - 100 kph "Stops" So anyway, do y'all think I'd be at a higher risk of cracking drilled discs? Think I should stick with slotted. or can I go for drilled? Thanks
astrosteve
Slotted discs work by "cutting" a fresh face on the pads each time the pedal is depressed whereas drilled discs are supposed to dissapate heat more efficienlty, i knew of a guy that "drilled" his own "slotted" discs without any problems and that was on a volvo T5r with Nitrous! He had no problems and apparently had the best of both worlds! Sorry mate but i think its a personal choice, what you really need to do is increase the surface area i.e bigger discs/calipers! Good Luck.
Omi
Or just get full silicone-carbide brakes...? Maybe straight carbon?
NewNiceMrMe
Or just push the pedal really hard.
Paul
i found when i had Black diamond drilled and groved discs they were noisy , but i didnt have them long enough to crack as i sold the car. Ive got cast in holes on my Porsche brakes, and after the 20K or so miles, they still crack, but not maybe as much as a drilled disk, and apparently after talking to the Amd porsche Guru, its normal and not cause for concern yet. Drillslinger
Hmm, well thanks for the replies Unfortunately, larger discs aren't yet a cost-effective alternative (Would need new rims for winter ). I was going to try and make an order today, but will wait a bit so any other input is appreciated Thanks again
astrosteve
You could just upgrade the pads! Im sure there are pads that quite literally EAT your discs alive but stop on a 2 pence ( once theyve reached operating temperature!) LOL
sayerbloke
Gee, thats an interesting user picture, Steve. Quite excellently trimmed to size might I add. Who did that for you? Problem with really good brakes is, as you`ve noted, they need to be up to temperature before they work properly. They also cost a fortune
Drillslinger
Yeah, the "Cost a fortune" bit is why I'm only looking to get better, std sized, discs I've been looking at the Green and Redstuff Ceramic pads, but fear they'd eat through std discs I've found the Brembo replacement discs, but just not sure if I should stick with slotted, or go for the (hopefully) quieter drilled Thx Edit: Currently looking at these, or these.... astrosteve
Sayer why thankyou for your kind words, i must agree with you it is excelently trimmed! Thanks for that! You did a nice job. As for the discs could you not source some of maybe a higher spec model or heavier car as these tend to have bigger brakes to start with!
astrosteve
You could always do what the "FLINSTONES" used to do..........
sayerbloke
They certainly look the business, and Brembo are up there with the likes of APRacing when it comes to knowing their brakes. Are drilled discs usually quieter then?
Drillslinger
The problem with bigger discs is that you need bigger wheels I run my std 15's in the winter, and can't afford 16" wheels and tires at the moment Otherwise I'd already have TT/S3 312mm discs I'm not sure if the drilled are quieter, but have found that the slotted discs sound like an airplane propeller when braking hard Hence my interest in the drilled discs
astrosteve
Ah ha! May sound a little daft but could you not source a set off a "scrapper"? Some poor unfortunate soul that that didnt use his brakes properly? Oh dear it seems im decending into childish gibberish again and not acting my age! sayerbloke
[ QUOTE ] the slotted discs sound like an airplane propeller when braking hard [/ QUOTE ] It`s probably about that stage that the brake components start glowing red for passers-by to see through the wheel spokes OK, in terms of priority, which rates highest-lowest; fade-free, absolute stopping power, longevity, noise ? I suppose the dreaded "Cost" is the overriding factor though...
astrosteve
I used to pull the hanbrake up a couple of notches (when racing) so that it made the brakes a little sharper (dont ask my "how" but it made the pedal feel higher and a little harder enabling me to SMASH it down when needed! Drillslinger
Well, the thought HAS crossed my mind, but for some reason, the Germans don't seem to do the "Junkyard" thing so much Plus, I'd do it for the rims, but would prefer getting the tires new (Although next winter I should be looking for new rubber it'll just be too late for the current brakes )
astrosteve
Have you thought about "Wilwood", there used to be a firm called "RALLY DESIGN" in Faversham Kent they were the main european importer for Wilwood and so you mught get a better deal........ [/ QUOTE ] Well, you're right that cost is a BIG factor, after all, I just dropped almost a grand on the new suspension (Prolly over 1k when all is done ) But I'm not against spending a bit more for quality parts. In fact, I could get the same ATE Powerdiscs for €110 but am still looking at the Brembos which would run about US $200. Other than that, as mentioned, I drive about 95% of the time on the Autobahn, so I need brakes which will hold up to frequent 200-100 kph "Stops", I drive over 600 miles a week, so longevity helps As for the rest, I'd like to avoid a lot of squealing, but understand that some is unavoidable Help any?? astrosteve
To be honest mate i think you need to email a "GURU" in one of the main manufacturers, i have done so in the past ( i wanted to fit a 5 speed box onto the back of an old 3.0 ford v6 (essex) and was told that it couldnt be done, i phoned a technical bloke a ford uk who was extremely helpfull and gave lots of good advice. In the end i did manage to fit the 5 speed after alot of machining and was well worth the look on peoples faces when going up the motorway at around 90+ changing gear twice and watching their faces as they think that an old mk1 capri was doing that speed in 2nd. But back to the point id try the companies i think youd be suprised how much help you would get!

Id still try the pros tho as theyre the ones that test/design the stuff and know it better than any of us mere mortals!
