kingofcars
Hello to all. first of all like to say what a great site ! This is my first post. Those of you who have been with the site a while will remember Fencemaster and his lack of luck with both Cars and Women! You will probably also remember his reluctant sale of his dented, Non running A8 4.2 Q . I bought said A8, which i am happy to report is now restored to the status "King of Cars " If you remember it was a fully loaded non sport version but with all the right bits. it now sports S8 wheels, mirrors etc and looks the dogs danglers . Mechanicaly fully sorted until last week! It now has a cylinder off ( no spark at all) checked the plug and the Coil pack both ok , Just does not seem to be getting any Juice. Any ideas where to start for a continuity check? I will post some pictures soon. Thanks

PaulW
First, swap coil packs with a cylinder on the other bank.....does the misfire switch cylinders? Then it's a bad coil pack. If not, then swap ignition amplifers, they take the low power signal from the ECU and turn it into a high power 12 VDC signal to fire the coil packs. They are under the black plastic cover right behind the air filter box. Pop that cover up, and you'll see two brown or black things with wires attached that feed the two electrical components. Swap them with each other and see which cylinder is bad....if it swaps to the other bank, that it's the ignition amplifer, about $200 US each I believe. If that still doesn't fix it.....then post again. And you need VAG-COM to see which cylinder is not firing correctly.....it's under engine, measuring blocks.....if you need to know what channel, ask and I'll look it up.
