B7 Audi 3.2FSI

Anyone know when the 3.2 FSI Engine will be released? Is this the same engine that is in the A3? I currently have a S-Line B6 and although I am happy with it I sometimes want more power. Before that I had an S3!

I could probably just about afford an S4 but the fuel consumption is awful and it would cost a fortune to run. What are the charateristics of the 3.2 FSI, is it likely to be turbo-charged at anypoint?

I've got a 1.8T in an S-Line so develops 190Bhp, not much difference to the 2.0 TFSI. Maybe I will just tune it for about 1K and get the same power.

Bhp is much hyped but is far from being the whole story. Driveability is much more about torque. My previous 2.5 TDI engine and my current 1.8T give the same horsepower but provided dramatically different driving experiences - the TDI would regularly leave BMW 330s standing at traffic lights without leaving 3rd gear (although admittedly once they got their revs up they'd pull away). The 1.8T feels puny by comparison (though has other advantages). Both are a nominal 163 BHP but that didn't matter peanuts: torque is whay counts.

I get the impression (only from reading reviews, mind) that the 2.0T FSI is significantly more torquey at low revs than the 1.8T. The latter has a small turbo and (even when chipped) only kicks in at higher revs, so the annoying low-end sluggishness when stop-starting around town won't go away with ECU modification. The 2.0T FSI uses a different turbo which kicks in at lower revs, as I understand it, and also the FSI technology is a bit more diesel-like when it comes to low-end torque. The effect is to make the 2.0T FSI much smoother and more potent when pulling away.

Thanks for the lesson GCab. Well I have a choice sell the current S-Line and buy a 2.0 TFSI, 3.2 FSI or S4. All of these would cost a fortune in both depreciation and the S4 in running costs. Or, I could spend about £1K and get a 40BHP/40FtT and wait for the B8 in a few years time when I would sell the B6 anyway.

keep the B6 s-line!

its a fantastic all round car.

the B7 is overhyped and overpriced at the mo. if youre gonna swap, get the S4 but serious cash needed for petrol if its a high-mileage main car. you wont feel much difference for the 3.2 or 2.0T.

... and the B7 doesnt look as good smashfreakB.gif

Yes I agree the B6 S-Line is a fantastic car, I haven't driven it much as the girlfriend is using it for work. Over the weekend it was filthy, I cleaned it and it looks fantastic again. Lovely red, nice, squat and aggressive on the road with big wheels. I just wish it had a closer performance and wow factor that I got with the S3. I guess now I really appreciate the S3, fantastic performance and economical too with a relatively low price tage for nearly new.

My understanding of difference in power/torque between the 1.8T S-line motor and the 2.0TFSI is 187bhp (190PS) @ 5700 rpm & 177 lbs/ft (240NM) 1950-5500 for the 1.8T and 197bhp (200PS) @ 6000 rpm & 206 lbs/ft (280NM) 1800-5000 rpm for the 2.0TFSI.

Performance wise this translates to .8 of a second faster to 62 and 2 mph faster top speed over the 1.8T (190).

2.5 TDI gives 163PS @ 4000 rpm & 229 lbs/ft (310NM) torque 1400-3500 rpm. 0-62 9.1 secs top speed 139 mph.

As pointed out torque makes all the difference for everyday driving, hence why modern day diesels "pull" so well with a relatively low power output compared to the equivalent sized petrol.

As far as the difference goes between the 1.8T (190) & the 2.0TFSI, there is the obvious difference between the 0-62 times, but you probably would be hard pushed to tell a huge amount of difference accelerating through the midrange. Of course the FSI will be better on fuel. Also bear in mind that the 1.8T is well proven where as the TFSI is a relativity new engine, so my have a few gremlins that have yet to be discovered?

The turbos on both engines kicks in very low down the rev range with maximum torque available throughout all normal engine speeds. In my experience I find in very difficult to tell when the turbo actually kicks in on the 1.8T (190), as the power delivery is so smooth.

Above figures are for A4 Avants with manual gearboxes.

My experience of the 1.8T is limited to my 150ps TT roadster, which in 2nd gear going up the hill from my house to the main road, I find that there is very little torque. Often I have to change up to first to get a torque which I'm used to (as with my previous A4 1.8 non-turbo). In otherwords, the 1.8 block itself without the turbo kicking in is probably underpowered. Only the turbo and the ECU boost the so-called "power" which translates to the 0-60 timing, but in real terms, there is a significant difference from when I feel the engine block on its own compared to the engine plus turbo.

I have not driven the 2.0T FSi but I'm assuming it drives like the 2.0 FSi (which I have driven when the A3 came out last year). The 2.0 fsi block alone drives well, not very punchy, but smooth and powerful - as you might expect with something as refined as Audi. Combining this with a turbo and I'm expecting a really nice whopper!

Hence... why I'm awaiting delivery hehe grin.gif

try to get your hands on them. i got a good deal actually. with all the loyalty discounts, conquest (18" upgrade to the s-line at no cost) and dealer discounts, I've worked it out to just about the same cost as getting the car from autoebid.com including the service fee of £400. Bargain I thought.

Thanks for the comparison between the 1.8T (190BHp) and the 2.0 TFSI. Interesting to note that if I did chip the 1.8T then I would get comparably performance to the 2.0 from the torque perspective. Plus it would only cost about £1000 as opposed to changing the car. In all other aspects I absolutely love my S-Line B6. Couple of Q for those in the know, when will the brand new version of the A4 be released (B8)? What is the power performance of the stage 2 AMD? Anyone got a graph of torque/power for AMD?

The block in the 2.0 T FSI is very different to the 2.0 FSI and is far far more refined. Audi have dipped into a lot of new tricks to make this engine a little bit special. It is going to be included in a lot of cars and that shows in the work that they have done on it to make it great.

Have got an A3 Sportback 2.0 T FSI with DSG and it is a revelation. Not tried the new Golf GTI yet but I bet it is very similar. The ride and handling is great, and the engine is fantastic. Even sounds pretty good for a 4 cylinder and far better than the old 1.8Ts that my Sister drives.

You will find great punch in your new car, equivilent to a 3.0 NA engine and will keep a 330 BMW honest and the average in 3000 miles of drving so far is 32mpg which has included some really good back road blasts. 169144-ok.gif

According to the Jan 2005 issue of Test Drive it say's about 2006. To my mind that would seem rather soon after the facelift so reckon more like late 2007, which would fit in with the average 7 year lifespan of a specific model. Best I can do don't know if anyone else has any more accurate info?

I just think that value for money (not list price but discounted price) the 190 S Line is far better than the new one!

I saved myself £3k - the difference between what I paid for mine and a like for like new model 200BHP one.

To "remap" the car is less than £600 and will give around 220bhp. Now I have saved £2,400 and have a more responsive car. wink.gif

IanHo I am thinking of the same thing, the one-click option would get around the service and warranty. That just leaves a friendly insurance company to find. However, at the moment I am probably going to wait until the car has had it's first service.

Okay one-click is for the reprogramming of the ECU, here is the info I got from AMD:

[ QUOTE ]

The One Click system is a simple plug in unit that allows you to go from standard Audi map, to AmD modified and back again leaving no trace as many times as you like.

It is a match box size and plugs into the diagnostic port above the peddles, the operation is with one button. Cost is £499.00 + VAT, programming time is 3 minutes once the first read of the original code is complete. The system leaves 0% trace of being there when the car is set back to standard. Gains are @40BHP and 45LBs of torque.

I thought there were problems with the one click?

I'm currently down 20 bhp , according to the rolling road at QST, 171 not 190. Currently under investigation by Audi otherwise I porbably would have the Oettinger 215 or even 230 option by now.

Insurance will cost you

Warranty, Audi will not want to know but Oettinger offer seperate cover.Remember that in Germany Oettinger are an Audi partner ( apparently means they are authorised service/warranty dealers)

B8 - interesting - 2006 I would have thought was too soon but the B5 facelift early in 1999 only lasted through the 2000 model year as the 2001s were B6

I've heard that the 2.0FSi is rough especially when compared to the 2.0T FSi, whose torque would/should be better as it has a longer stroke than the 1.8

Torque is amazing! up to 4,000RPM but after that no difference and I find that you drive at below 4,000 rpm all the time really anyway (or I do now). well worth £528 - Star Perforance.

You can hear the tubo now! before you could just hear the turbo when going up a hill and at about 2 - 2,500 rpm. Now it's from 2 - 4,000 rpm

Even before but more so now - it does not matter what gear you are in, as long as you are above 2,000 revs it will pull as well in any gear!

At 50mph to overtake I would normally drop to 3rd but 4th is so GOOD! and 5th and 6th for overtaking. wink.gif

Oh I am talking about a friends car wink.gifwink.gif
