You're probably right. When all the boy racers were screaming about in XR3's, all I ever wanted was a Golf GTI. Never did get one, what with spending most of my (very small) wages on beer and bikes, the only car I could afford was a Morris Marina. I only had it for six months, then flogged it to buy a MK 2 Escort which wouldn't start. The Marina continued to be seen around the Lake District, utilising wooden blocks as rear suspension units! That must have been some ride.

It was about 1985 when I finally managed to get a GTI. But not a MK 1 Golf, a MK 2 Scirocco which, for some reason, kept eating gearboxes.

Ah, the G60. The car I never had but desperately wanted. A Corrado G60 and my life would have been complete. Then they stopped making them and put a (silly?) 16v engine in instead. I remember reading a review in a mag about a guy who transplanted a G60 into a Golf something or other, had it tuned, lowered, resprayed, etc and then lent it to the mag to test drive. They said the acceleration from 130mph was unreal! shocked.gif

Definately a car to love, not just to own!

Had 3 Mk.1 GTI's back in the day,all of them were great drivers cars. The last one was a Campaign that had been modded by GTI Engineering from new.It ran 150bhp and revved forever,it was a proper exciting car.Until that dreaded day when I parked it in the wrong place and came back to find it gone! Coppers found it a week later burnt out on the roadside. The good ol' days of hot hatches getting nicked every five minutes-b'stards,if I'd 'ave caught 'em........
