Heated washer jets?

Whilst doing the ritual Cab cleaning today I noticed that the LH bonnet hinge has a black braided cover running through that by touch contains washer tubing...that'll be the water feed for the washer jets that are on the underside of the rear edge of the bonnet then.

The RH bonnet hinge has a similar braided effort but this time I can feel 2, maybe 3 wires.....I wonder if the car has Heated Washer Jets?

I certainly didn't order them - they are standard in the Comfort Pack that included electric seats and of course on the delectable S4.

Does anyone else have a black braided wiring loom running up through the drivers side (RHD) bonnet hinge?

There isn't anything else in the bonnet that is electrical is there?

Really ?? So I have them ? Spent Dec 27th driving 100 miles with a clogged driver's side jet trying to keep the screen clear of ice at -3 using just the other side jet and the wipers shtf.gif

Do they only come on if you turn the mirror + rear window heating on, then ? Would make sense to tie them in to the external temp sensor, I'd have thought...

NB I don't have comfort pack, but do have heated mirrors as a separate option - is there a difference (with regard to washer jet heaters) ?

Ah. (or Argh). Doesn't look like I have them then - another example of bizarre options packaging: I have auto-dimming main mirror, auto lights, heated electric seats, heated mirrors, interior light pack; but since (in my case) these didn't come in the form of the Comfort Pack despite paying pretty much the entire price of one, I don't get auto-dipping wing mirrors (for parking) or, it seems, heated washer jets.

Daft. My brother, who's into his Japanese cars, never tires of pointing out that Mazdas, Hondas, and Toyotas all come in only two of three variants; and by the time you've picked the upper-range engine specs in any model range, you've usually got every option thrown in. Maybe he has a point.

What's particularly irritating is that I bet many of these things are actually wired in to every car (how economic is it for them to vary the installation of trivial wiring for every car on the production line?) but then de-activated for 'standard' vehicles in order to maintain the price differential.

lol had a Volvo once on which they regularly caught fire! (Bit at least they were standard!)

GCab, what washer fluid do you use? A VW dealer I know who sees me alright for VAG fluid tells me they change quite a lot of washer jests clogged by the wrong type of fluid (whatever the wrong type is). Also had a mate with a E55 AMG clog his, bought Halfords expensive but this was not correct either.

Autoglym - must admit I had let it run a bit too thin for the icy conditions which is why I hadn't regarded it as a 'fault' on the car - but knowing that heated jets would pobably have got round it makes it annoying. The stuff coming out the other side was fine once it hit the glass (and the driver side jet cleared once warmed later in the day, so I'm sure it was ice and not dried washer fluid/goo causing the problem).

GCab, you SHOULD have heated washer jets as part of just specifying heated mirrors. Nothing to do with the comfort pack. Why not check out for the braiding as noticed by cosmicblue? If it is not there you have a right have a word with Audi. If it is there then something is not working (and you say the passenger side was OK at -3C suggesting that side is heated OK).

Maybe in another cost cutting exercise they only heat the driver's side and you got a LHD version!! (Only joking, please let me only be joking!)

No, the heated washer jets (where fitted) should come on with the ignition irrespective if heated rear widnow setting or external temperature.

Not so sure this is the case. I think the heated mirrors and washer jets come on when the heated rear window is on.

As far as I understand, heated washer jets come with heated side view mirrors. They do not come on with the rear window heaters. The side mirrors are constantly heated, even through the summer. This I know for a fact on my TT. Had it checked with the dealer and he confirmed this. Even noticed it during the rain in summer that my side mirrors were constantly dry (whoopee!). In the winter, when it's frosty, you can usually see the frost thawing out around the heated jets shortly after the engine is fired up.

See pages 91 and 94 of the Audi Cab Manual for the official Audi version, which is Heated Washer Jets (where fitted) always on with ignition, Heated Mirrors (where fitted) on with heated rear window. TT maybe different, especially if heated mirrors are standard. Not saying the manual is correct but that is what it says for Cab (but then it also implies heated washer jets are standard)

Yeah, when I picked mine up I noticed the elements in the side windows (Avant), and made comment to stealer about heated side windows, to which he happily replied yes.

Now either he didn't want to make me look stupid (what a nice man!) or he was just as stupid himself?

BTW: New (decent) pics in my gallery!!!!! 169144-ok.gif

I studied my manual carefully today. Indeed, in black and white, the mirrors are only heated when the rear screen demist is activated. It indicates the washers are heated all the time and warns abiut using sufficient screen wash containing anti-freeze in the colder months....
