Gemmzl
Hi all, I have a Polo GTi and it makes this strange humming noise when i stop. Now it had the BIG service from VW and before it went in for the service it was making this noise as well. Now they change the brake pads so i thought that could have been the problem but.........its still happening. Now i've see nall this business about the clutch problem and i know the car had the clutch recall work done about 7k ago. Its not a really loud noise but its louded enough to hear everythime it decides to crop up. Thanks all Gemma
Moschops
Possible wheel bearing gone? Is it noticable from a particular area of the car? Ie front or rear. have you checked that nothing is trapped in the brake pads, stone or grit?
R32North
Is it when you brake or when you are actually stopped? Is it high pitched or a low hum?
Gemmzl
its a low hum. Its been back to VW but they said it was fine. They never took it out for a test drive though! Its when the car almost comes to a stop. Say for example i'm going to stop from 30mph it'll start to happen around 10mph.
Skidmark
If you let the car just roll to a halt, without using the brakes, do you still get the noise...
Gemmzl
will try that and get back to you.
Gemmzl
The car did not make the noise when rolling to a stop. If i brake hard it doesnt make the noise.
Ritey
So the humming is only when you brake normally at low speeds ?
Skidmark
Is it from the front....rear....left....right...? Try it in gear...and in neutral ....
R32North
Brakes or Gearbox - would be my initial thoughts. Can you get someone who knows about cars to stand at a point, in a car park say, and then you can roll past them braking trying to get the humm to sound. From outside they should have a better idae where its coming from, if its an outside type noise. If they hear nothing from say the brakes or wheel area then you can focus on other areas. As its when your slowing down to about 10mph, a 2nd person type test is easy to do and should yeild some results
