A8_Tony
OK guys, the time has come for me to upgrade my mobile phone. I've currently got the Orange SPVE200, which is a great phone, but battery life leaves a lot to be desired. So what recommendations have you got? I need the following features without question: Bluetooth (I know it's obvious, but there are new phones out there without it!) PC Synchronisation would be great for Calendar/Contact management Availability of a decent car kit, that won't be obsolete if I change the manufacturer/handset again Any recommendations guys? I would like to go for the Sony Ericcson P910i, but unfortunately, that would mean me paying out of my own pocket for a company mobile... Cheers fellas
Omi
Hold out for a little while... Orange are likely to launch the latest PDA/phone/camera/teasmaid quite soon. - I've been playing with it at work and it's really good. A lot smaller than the M1000, nice simple design, powerful Pocket PC platform, advantage of synching easily with your other M$ software... Camera quality isn't wonderful due to compression, but I'm sure we'll be able to hack that. Also means you can TomTomGo... Has Bluetooth, quad-band, bells, whistles, and wLan is available as an optional extra. It rocks!
NewNiceMrMe
I have a simple attitude with mobiles now: Does it do everything you NEED it too? Does it do something you'd find useful? After that, it doesn't matter what you choose because a week after you've bought it it'll be out of date anyway...
A8_Tony
Omi - any idea what it's called? Where I can see some info on it?
Omi
Have a search about for the iMate Jam... Same device, just a less attractive case.
A8_Tony
That'll be the new SPV2000 then? Hmmm good reviews abound, but again, it'll mean extra wonga for a company mobile
Paul
c500 has excellent battery life ive been told, and looks like a stunning screen. Im on Orange and have a k700i, which i would says been my best phone out, im kind of dubious to go to another brand now. having looked around the Orange shop today, i must say i found their current phone selection pretty poor. Big_Dan
I think the problem is Nokia ... I too have jumped to a K700i, but it's far from perfect. I have the M2000 and it's pretty good, I like the fact that it uses wi-fi as the default connection before it bounces back to GPRS. The replacement for your current phone is much better according to one of the guys at work, they loved their old one and found the new one much better. My perfect phone is all the functions of an M2000 in a K700i size box with 3G - can't be far away
Paul
ive gone from nokia, and i wont be going back anytime soon. A. because of their build quality, B.Bugs, they release them, bugs and all, then fix them C.Their current stupid shaped designs. as for the imate jam, can anyone imagine talking into that damn thing? K700i been fine for me, except for maybe a thirsty battery, and occasional loss of bluetooth, which seems easy fixed with a battery disconnection., which would probably not happen , if i turned my phone off time to time and reset it, but I never do, just switch it to silent. Foggy
If PC synchronisation means Outlook and is important then TBH you probably need to stay with a SPV. Everytime I have used software that comes with a phone to sync my contacts and calendar with my mobile it's always done a less than satisfactory job. The SPV uses Pocket PC though, and it raison d'etre is to do this. As Paul said the new C500 is good, in my opinion much better than the originals, it is what the first SPV should have been. It has Bluetooth as per your requirements and more details are at Orange SPV C500
ian_m
Tony, I have just got the Samsung D500 on Orange and its a great phone, if you can wait until the next Bath meet you can take a look then!! or if that is too long, I am only about 5 mins away if you want to take a look! Omi
Guys, I'm tech support for Orange... - I personally have an E200, but use various phones and devices. I don't feel stupid holding the really small PDA to my ear, and the specs on it are great. Like Foggy said, if you're synching with a PC then you're going to benefit from a Microtoss-based device. - Smartphone is good, but PocketPC with GSM/GPRS is better. 3G PDA/phone/integrated camera etc is still a way off, but I'll probably see it first and be on here bragging! Botang
[ QUOTE ] K700i been fine for me, except for maybe a thirsty battery, and occasional loss of bluetooth, which seems easy fixed with a battery disconnection., which would probably not happen , if i turned my phone off time to time and reset it, but I never do, just switch it to silent. [/ QUOTE ] Mines exactly the same, bluetooth does lock up from time to time which is a PITA as I use bluetooth handsfree. However all of these issues that you and I have mentioned have been fixed with the new firmware. I really should send it off to get it upgraded, a mate of mine has one with the new firmware and it is much better on battery life.

[/ QUOTE ] Can depend on the network you get the phone from sometimes. Some just release them will little or no testing, Orange I think do a lot more to check them over thus they sometimes have frustratingly delayed phones but they work when they arrive. Or that has been my experience at least. Got a 6230 and I love it to bits. Does everything a phone should do very well.
BURTON
Im bored with my 6230.. Fed up with the poor memory of holding txt's!!
Omi
Orange change the software on most of the devices we release... This is why there's a delay. - We have products and services that aren't supported by the generic software (2 phone lines on 1 SIM, Orange themes and proprietary applications, browser settings etc.) so we change and test the software before launch, hence the delay. What's the problem with your 6230 Burton mate?? Shouldn't have a problem holding SMS. Where are you storing them? Handset memory or MMC?
Mollox
apart from how silly "iMate Jam" sounds, I'm slightly perturbed by what google images throws up in response to the search!
CarMad
Was going to say that myself. I can hold 300 ish txt on my 6230 .. surely that is enough. If you haven't got an upgraded sim when you got the new phone that might be the problem ?!? But our resident Orange support can help us P.S. Dave
I'm trying out a NEC 338.. very average so far video messaging is Ok, but no bluetooth?
BURTON
How on earth do you change it from 200 txt's! Its all on the phone but for the life of me I can't get to go onto my card!!
Omi
Uprated Orange SIMs still only hold 20 SMS on the SIM card... - You should always leave the SIM SMS memory free, as network updates and some functional messages can only be delivered to the SIM and won't work otherwise. SIM Contacts memory is 200 spaces on the newer ones. Burton, check your Menu > Settings > Phone Settings > Memory Status > Text Messages... This should show how much free space you have. It's dynamically allocated to some extent, but check your total memory allocation too, as low memory will cause problems with the performance full stop. Have you guys considered turning SafeSearch ON in Google if you're offended by the Image Search results? - You must have turned it off yourself at some point anyway, you dirty little boys!
