s4dreamer
After 2+ years setting the dates and posting up notifications of the Northern Pub Meets, I've decided to retire, thereby allowing me flexibility in whether or not to attend, and also enabling us to pick a new location which was discussed briefly at the last meet. I'm going to make this post on RS246 too as it's a joint meet and if we have more than one volunteer, those interested can discuss it between themselves (or in here). Just so it is clear my preference is to keep it as an evening pub meet where we can chat and have some grub. So, the pub needs to do decent pub food, and preferably good beer too. Ideally, it should be reasonably close to the motorway network so that it is easy for folks to get to. Bear in mind that we have people come from up near Lancaster, Crewe (when he can be bothered to turn up) and Sheffield - not to mention the frozen wastelands of the real North of England. Anyway, lets have a chat about it and if you folks can come up with suggestions for pubs, that'd be great (especially if you know them). I'd like to finish up by saying a big thanks to everyone who's turned up to these meets over the past couple of years. They've been good fun with a great variety of personalities and cars. Munki
Sad to hear it. I am not volunteering to take over the duties or owt, but I reckon we should have at least one South Yorkshire meet. I think I mentioned this to you and PhilT last time. I reckon we could pull in a fairly decent crowd from the local lads and I recommend the Fox House. One evening at this time of year should be pretty empty I would imagine, being too cold and dark for the climbers and most of the walkers. Food is pretty good, they have a decent car park and log fires etc. Anyone interested?
NewNiceMrMe
I have no problem looking at proper Northern meetings (South Yorks?? ) i.e. the far coldest points of the Northeast (Borders down to Scarborough say and across to York, Leeds etc) but I fear that if I were to do that no-one would attend, such is my popularity at present... Joking guys....
s4dreamer
Agree with you Munki that a South Yorks meet could work. The Fox house is great for me - I could almost walk home from there Andrew Badger lives local to that too, so that's 3 of us, then if we could persuade Riz and PhilT to come in from their respective outposts, that would make 5 (but I think we need more). We're currently discussing meet locations on RS246 - for the regular meets, I've stuck my oar in for rotating between the Manchester and Leeds ends of the M62. davidhodgkinson
Hi trev. let's hope it's not to much further south :-) I've enjoyed the past few meetings, it would be a shame to see in the new year with a lot less faces. Any further south and we might not be able to make it :-(
s4dreamer
Hi David, I don't think further south is the answer for the regular meets (at least until we get critical mass and can expand into S.Yorks/N.Midlands + W.Yorks/Lancs meets separately). I think the consensus in December was that we find a pub closer to the M62. So, to make it easier for some folks (you, me and DavidT for instance) I think that rotating between the Manchester end of the M62 and the Leeds/Wakefield end would help broaden the appeal. It's just a matter of finding the pubs now
David T S4
Thanks for arranging them Trev (and to big Al before you), you've put a lot in and it can be a thankless task at times. Whilst we are debating the whole thing, I suggest we set dates for the next few and hold them at the same location, otherwise if interest wanes we will end up without. What do people think of this suggestion?
CarMad
Sounds good to me. Will make an extra effort to attend. Wasn't around when they were on in the back end of last year.
David T S4
I've put a new thread on with the dates for Jan - Apr inc. This will keep us going whilst new dates and locations are sorted out.
