Mollox
I'd heard certain rumours that BMW were readying a rival to the ludicrously popular Merc SLK. At one time there were several ‘sightings’ in Germany and then it seemed to quiet on the forums. Well, I’ve just had this through from my chum in Germany who normally isn’t wrong on BM matters. He says there was a lot of consideration given to introducing the variant in the E46 lifespan but that its almost 100% certain that there will be a shortened, folding hardtop variant to fight the latest SLK. The “CCi” tag has been reserved apparently. You heard it here first!
NewNiceMrMe
Oooo oooo M CCi maybe.... Cancel order, cancel order.... I like that. Bit small maybe. Yes, a bit small. Redo order, redo order.... Cars, such a reactive purchase.
Smudge
Any ideas on which chasis BM are using on the car? 1 Series, or 3?
fatcat
If you compare the new 1 series and the CCi it is obvious the platform is not derived from that, my money is that they will produce the CCi from the new 3 series platform. I'm gonna question my local dealer - looks like a winner
NewNiceMrMe
[ QUOTE ] Any ideas on which chasis BM are using on the car? 1 Series, or 3? [/ QUOTE ] Did you actually look at the pic! No way is it a 1-series chassis.

xspencex
Don't think you take much, other than concept from th epic being a heavy Photo shop.. I guess If they are competeing with the Merc SLK they will have to use a small chassis like the 1 Series and not the bigger and heavier 3 series chassis. Mollox
Well, isn't the SLK based on a C-class platform? My guess is that it would be a shortened new 3 series platform. However, I can't help thinking '3 series compact' when I look at the proportions of the rear so maybe it won't be that simple?
NewNiceMrMe
Well it looks nice-ish anyway.
bazza_g
This CCi pic is a photoshop joke, isn't it ? It looks woeful. I thought BMW had always poo-poo'd the idea of a folding hardtop, something to do with iffy weight distribution ?
NewNiceMrMe
Ask Mollox....he posted it....Mollox?
Mollox
If they'd "always poo-pood the idea of a folding hardtop", you count how many folding tintops will be wearing propellors in 5 years Also I would have thought its quite funky for weight distribution - this is just me going off on one, but when up the mass of the roof is spread roughly around the centre of the car (no bad thing there) and then at the touch of the button you get to shift all that weight into the boot! + Plus, I think an aluminium folding roof would eradicate much of the weight difference with a conventional multi-layer canvas. They both need lots of motors anyway...
NewNiceMrMe
Plus it would be safer if I rolled one.

Mollox
I questioned why the roof was so high and apparently there is a definite lean towards a more aggressively raked screen coupled with a much lower roofline, in a sort of speedster/hot-roddy styl-ee for the latest concept based on the new 3! Now that sounds interesting!
Ragdude
That is a really bad photoshop of a current E46 coupe. Half the drivers head is missing and the person who did the photoshop didn't even think to move the door shutline. How would you ever get out of that car with such small doors. There are strong rumours that the next generation 3 series convertible will be the recipient of the 1st folding metal roof on a BMW. Here are some spyshots E90 3 series convertible
Markus
It looks like the photoshop might have started off as a E46 Saloon. Surely it would have made more sense to use a Coupe. At least then (as noted by ragdude) the door would be a sensible length. Great idea though. If i had a convertible i'd really like it to be a hardtop convertible, and the SLK doesn't do much for me. Although the new one doesn't look too bad. I guess it would mean sacrificing the rear seats though, so that would make it a 2 seater 3 series? I hope they do it. jbomz3
I didn't think anything would come of the hardtop convertible e46 bertone played about with . JJ .
