Vibration while braking

My S4 is getting a noticeable vibration while braking from about 100 down to about 80 (allegedly). No vibration above (allegedly) or below these speeds. Does anyone else get anything like this? Is it simply a matter of getting the wheels re-aligned? Why would they be unaligned in the first place on a car that's only done 7000 miles? The only time I've experienced anything like this before was on a car that actually had a slightly buckled wheel. Any advice appreciated.

Thanks,

Gatt.

And come to think of it, I wonder how I'm going to get them to admit there's a problem...

Thats a good question. Although you don't have to disclose the speeds to them. They should be able to confirm a warped disk(s) in the workshop without needing to hoof it down the M-Way.

Further - surely a disk is covered under warranty??

I would assume so, as long as there's no evidence of impact, which hopefully there isn't, although I'm the 2nd owner so who knows.

Will find out at the end of the month when dodgy ignition coils due to be looked at.

In theory it's that easy but they could be difficult. The only times I've heard of warped disk is after someones been giving them a thorough work out (e.g. track or very 'spirited' driving) and then parks up without a warm down. The area enclosed by the pads cools slower than the exposed parts and can therefore get distorted.

Good luck. I'd be interested to hear the results as I may then worry less about track days! sekret.gif

  • 2 weeks later...

So, it's back from the dealer with 3 new ignition coils (on warranty) and a new set of front disks and pads (not on warranty). I was initially told they would be able to warranty the disks and were trying to convince Audi Customer Care to accept the pads, then turned up to pick it up to discover that Audi had told them it typical wear and tear and neither disks or pads were covered. So £420 later I'm waiting for a chance to do some heavy high speed braking.

I'm sorry to hear that Gatt. I am amazed at what Audi reject under warranty , it does scare me a bit. I work at a dealership (non VAG) and that would just not happen on a 7k mile car . We had a car in only last week with I think about 12k that had gone metal to metal (service at 18k or 2 yrs) and the manufacture picked up the tab after a phone call to customer services. So warped discs wouldn't even get a call to C/S you may get charged for pads tho. P*ss poor IMO from 'prestige' manufacture , I bet Skoda punters get better treatment. NONO3.GIF

I had my front pads replaced at 38k and the rear ones at 45k. When they replaced the front ones they said that the discs had worn slightly ie there was a slight raised lip all the way round the disc, but fortunately they said it wouldn't need replacing. I guess it shows how much pressure is being applied to the discs and how they could become easily warped.

The other thing I found out is that only the front brakes have a worn pads sensor !, I guess you have have to wait for grinding noise and smoke before you are suppose to replace the rears. I can't believe this could be a cost cutting measure sportifs2.gif, can't take much effort to put the sensors on the rear too, just for peace of mind.

End of rant grin.gif

i also found out that only the front pads have sensors on them to the tune of £281.00, Although most of the time they will insist that the discs are changed at the same time as the pads, had mine done last week and it made a big difference as the old discsseemed to have high spots on them
