Hi, i have a 1999 golf v5, i like it alot but i have got a problem with the abs, does anyone konow what it might be.

This is the problem. first the ABS warning light came on, i was told it might be dirt in a wheel sensor after it went off again.

Then it came back on, as i slowed down and got to an almost stop i heard a gringing noise then i felt preasure pushing back on the break pedal, then a quick knocking noise and the breake pedal was knocking back agianst my foot at the same time as the noise.

I thought maybe some thing is in part of the abs workings and making the grinding.

the problem happened again on the way home, but not every time i slowed down and it only ever happens at real slow speeds.

Does any one konow what it might be please?

Does sound like dirt in ABS ring, The senosr reads off a ring that goes round the CV joint on the front wheels and on the brake disc on the rear wheels. It just a ring with a constance machined slots if these get dirt in the ABS thinks the wheel is locked and starts the ABS (the noise and the grinding noise/pedal movement you have got)

The reason it only happens at slow speeds sometimes is when going fast the sensor cant tell if one is blocked up and if you press the brake on the clear section it wont happen.

Cheap but long option: Take all the wheels off and clean all the sensors.

Short but will cost: As the light been on you will have a Internmit fault code stored, this will point you to the correct wheel and just clean that ring. (but will cost you a ABS ECU scan)

Tobes

Would VAG-COM detect a code for this? Or does it need something differant?

Thanks

Vag-com would give you code that should be "intermit" because the sesnor is working correctly the rest of the time.

There might be others from where sensors have been replaced! and the fault was just left to change to "intermit" and that will switch the light off.
