4 Speed transmission fluid change instructions??

Hi there.

Have done this myself with the 4 speed CLM transmission. This can be found on the Tranmission itself. Do not have any pictures of it but it is easy enough to do. There are 3 parts to this. The ATF Oil, Gasket for Sump, and Gearbox Strainer (Audi Name). There are also 2 magnets in the bottom of the Sump that can be cleaned.

Sump is held on with 6 Bolts. You may have to drop one of the CATS to do this. The Sump has a Drain Plug on the bottom and a re-fill one at the front. Strainer is held in place with 2 Bolts.

The main problem is the dropping of the CAT. This is the biggest job. Only 4 bolts but can be a bit of a B*&^&*. Once out of the way, loosen 6 bolts, to make sure you can get them out. Loosen the re-fill plug, again to make sure you can re-fill. Once all this is done. Open the drain plug and have a bucket to collect. Once down to a drip, remove 6 bolts and drop the sump. Clean out, as per AudiPages. You will then see the Oil Filter (Strainer). 2 bolts and this drops off. Allow to drain for a while, and then put all back together with the new Gasket. Filling is easy with the front plug. No need for any special filling kits, just fill from the bottles.

Connect up the CAT and make sure that the re-fill plug is in. Do not tighten up fully as you will have to go through the gears, as per Audipages and top up the Oil.

Once this is all done clean up and go for a blast. Then check to make sure all is fine underneath.

Should only take about a couple of hours if luck is on your side. As I said main issue is with the CAT in the way and how rusted are the bolts.

4 Speed CLM sump is fairly small in comparison to the 5 speed ones and the manual says 3 litres to drain and re-fill. This was correct for me, but it may be wise to err on the side of caution and get more. You can always return it.

If you need more info then please let me know. I am sure there are other people who have done this as well.

Anyone with pictures, this would be most welcome.

msey no offence mate but sounds like you only got 1/3 of the fulid out. Admitedly Audi do say 3 litres for a fluid change but the actual capacity (the amount put in by the factory) is 9.7 litres. When my 4 speed CML was serviced they replaced about 9 litres. The refill procedure should be more complicated as well, you should have someone going through the gears to make sure its fully topped up I believe.

I admit that the amount of fluid may be more than I got out. This was only about 3 litres, as per the manual. I would advise that you follow Botang advise and get the full 9 litres to be on the safe side.

As per filling I did state that you should refill as per Audi Pages. This is the process that I followed and it worked a dream.

So my question then is, how do you get the full 9 litres out. This would be useful to myself and Paul.

Thanks.

Hi Msey,

I don't think we can get all the oil out, as a lot of it will be in the torque converter, the thing to do is change it, run a few miles and change it again. Unfortunately this means the oil will always be partially dirty but still much cleaner than pre change!

Thanks for the info. Will search on the WEB and see if I can track something down about this. If I do then I will let you know. Hope this all goes well for you.

Found a PDF in German from ZF.COM that states it has 9.7 Litres in it, I think from the translation. May have to be that I follow AudiPages and leave it to drain overnight. Then trying to gauge how much oil has come out of it, and making sure that I re-Fill the same amount.

Will carry out a 2nd Oil change and try and take pictures this next time, for anyone else in the future.

Cheer M Sey

As far as I'm aware its just a case of letting it drian. Thinking about it now I cant remember if it was 8 or 9 litres that they changed.

There is a prcedure in Vag-com that allows you to do an output test. It tests the maximum and minimum of all the solenoids in the gearbox. Just thinking out loud, (this is not how my mechanic did it) it may be a good idea to do this just before you drop the sump. Wonder if Paul W has ever tried doing that?

  • 4 months later...

Just finished procedure yesterday (with filter change).

Local Audi stealer sweared that I would need 3,5 to 4 litres of their precious oil - so I bought 4.

As you ca imagine, during refilling it occured that it is not enough! mad.gif So back again to stealer (fortunately I've made it during their working hours) - one more bottle pls'.

Finally, it was 5 litres necessary to fill it up.

Just for info.

PS. CML of course.
