VW Golf TDI 1997 1.9 - Engine cutting out

I love my Golf with a passion,It has been a true and trusted friend, now it needs my help. Recently the engine has been cutting out for no apparent reason. When I start the car, normally the coil symbol on the dashboard lights up, and after a few seconds it goes out and only then can you start the engine (it's a diesel thing!) However when I try and restart the car after it has cut out, the coil symbol is unlit. After 5-10 minutes if I try and restart it, the coil symbol is back again and the car starts, but soon cuts out again. Every time it cuts out the same pattern unfolds with the coil symbol. My garage have had a good look at it but could find nothing wrong. However the car was still cutting out, and it now languishes in the garage, safe but forlorn.

Can anybody help me out there? I would be eternally grateful for any help that is forthcoming.

Cheers!

Willie

Hi - new to the forum and posting for the first time as I have a similar problem and you seem to know what you're talking about ;-)

My R reg TDI 1.9 has two problems that may be related:

1. The turbo cuts out on most journeys. I can't see any pattern except its usually when I accelerate but essentially, after 10 mins of driving it cuts out. If I restart, its back. I was told it was the air flow meter and I changed this, but to no effect.

2. More recently, its cutting out all together. Again, seems pretty random but unlike Williewatt, its when I'm driving - a bit alarming when I'm doing 80 on the m5! This time, I have to switch off, key out and wait 5-10 seconds before restarting. I will always restart.

Do you think they're related and also to do with relay 109?

Cheers

When you say the turbo cuts out,do you mean that the car is still driving but the power(from the turbo)has gone?

If so,you could have a sticking actuator where dirt and crap has collected round the arm.Worth checking and an easy fix with some WD40 or similar.

Yes, thats what I mean - after 10 mins driving, I have a milkfloat confused.gif

I have to confess that I wouldn't know one end of an actuator from another - is it a DIY job?

Sorry mate,bit late with reply.

Yes you can do it yourself but will probably need it on ramps to get access to the turbo-so maybe best to take it to a garage and ask if they can do it for you.

HI

I have a 1998 VW Jetta Wolfsburg Edition.

It has been very random and stopped several times in rain.

Very curious- after it dries out it runs well. Anyhow the problems may or may not be connected. Finally I drove it and it just stopped. Battery and everything works, but glow plug does not, and when I turn key I hear 1 click and thats it. Like a blow fuse or somethin. I've been following some of your notes on relay109 problem Could this be it?? How should I make sure this is the problem? Car does not want to start.

Most likely the MAp (manifold absolute pressure) sensor that is causing the turbo to cut out. Fitted one last week and it cured the fault. The turbo kept going flat and then if the ignition was turned off and then back on it was ok again for 5 minutes then the same happened again.
