Colin M
Although many of us use Skype, my neighbour has just bought an IP phone for his non tech family to use. You can get a "local" number allocated and give that out as normal. As long as your (broadband) router is online, the normal looking phone plugs into it and rings when dialled exactly like a normal blower. Cheap global call rates ang good quality sound too. http://www.sipgate.co.uk

Colin M
You can get the USB phones from Tamms! I'm not talking about a phone that plugs in the USB port of a computer, this is standalone phone with it's own "proper" number that plugs straight into the router and does not require a computer to be switched on or anyone to be signed in to a service (other than connected to broadband).
