I'm just about to start a In-car computer/Hard disk based mp3 system with 7" touch screen.

Does that count/interest anyone?

of course it does 169144-ok.gif i've started a thread for ya! grin.gif

i've been planning mine for ages. at the mo i'm figuring out the wiring on the nav controller that sits in the centre console. (its the nav controller that comes with the standard audi navigation system, i got the controller etc from vagparts)

the idea is the pc is controlled by the wheel on the nav controller to scroll up/down and select.

i did ponder a touch screen, but you lose the OEM look and i have farther to reach across

Yes, hopefully.

I indend to put the 7" monitor at an angle, over the ashtray as I never use it and it should fit in between the two side parts that slope up towards the Climate Control.

The attached piccy shows the components I've selected so far.

The network card slots directly onto the board and allows me to pull up into the driveway at which point my network should detect it and start the synchronisation of MP3's to and from the car based on settings I'll create.

I've nearly completed the software and have beta tested it with a laptop. As soon as I got near the house, the wireless network found it and MP3's started copying over.

Intended Plans:

<ul type="square">

[*]To have my entire MP3 collection in the car at any time (30GB)

[*]To allow the system to remove songs I never listen to, so that the system isn't bogged down

[*]Automatic playlist generation, depending on my mood. If I like the song I'm listening to, I press a button and all similar songs are queued up.

[*]Car detected automatically when in proximity of house. Automatically collects new songs I've ripped to house PC and copies them over.

[*]Personalised playlists for each driver

[*]System to hibernate, rather than power-down to reduce boot-up times to just 1 second

The touchscreen helps a lot but I can also get a Wireless Remote control to operate the system with, but I prefer the screen - but at £200, it's not cheap.

Still, I can always amend the software easily enough. Screen shots of that will be ready witin days. 169144-ok.gif

Two areas of concern...

Getting Audio cables and VGA cable from boot to centre console (ashtray) area.

Secondly... what do I do with existing Concert Head Unit - how do I get the sound into the back of that, or get the unit to play it without telling me there is no device connected?

you'll need to disassemble the centre console. best way i think. some people go down the sides under the carpet too.

do you have a cd-changer? hooking into that is an easy way, can then have a switch to select changer/pc audio

Audio cables should be easy from the boot. You will find if you look up in the top of the boot there are some big gaps and you can feed a cable through to the back shelf and the speaker there, down the side of the seats and under the carpets....or is this not discrete enough. By the way, the rear shelf speaker guard comes off dead easy....
