Thankfully only an MMI crash!

Hammering past a long line of traffic on a typical country A-road, probably pushing on a fair bit, and the MMI screen, console backlighting and top 1/3rd of the DIS display go black.

I had one of those 1/2 second flaps, while I assessed what still did and didn't work (oddly enough, my speed and rpms right then were constant, so it looked like the dials had frozen too for that split second), then instinct took over and I booted it to get to a safe place to get back into the traffic and slow down to their speed.

MMI not completely dead, but poorly. Press any button and after a couple of seconds it would wake up, show the MMI boot screen and there would be a sound of relays clicking from the back, then 20 seconds later back to playing dead.

Tech at the dealer (just round the corner from my office) swapped the console panel to make sure it wasn't a stuck button, no joy. After scratching his head for a couple of hours with the battery disconnected, it suddenly started working when he put it all back together.

He still thought a 20 mile road test was in order, the bugger.

Hmm.. interesting.. I suppose that it is a computer and at some time it will crash??

I had a similar thing in my S6, (not RS!) where the Dis would go completly black.. sometimes it would reset, other times it would need a engine re-start. I never really questioned it because it happened so infrequently and was easy to put right!

  • 1 year later...

My MMI crashed tonight (2006 D3). I started the car, but the screen didn't come up until I pushed the button to do it manually. After that, the screen wouldn't go up or down and everything stayed black, even if I restarted the car. Lots of clicking from the boot though.

After about 20mins I managed to get the Audi MMI splash screen by pushing buttons at random (not the 3 reset keys as I couldn't read the manual and drive!) and eventually it came back to life.

Hopefully it was a one-off, but as it is in warranty I will mention it to the garage anyway.

Steve

I lost all volume to radio and CD and wasn't able to restore until I locked the car with the remote and unlocked it again. Had a similar experience when car wouldn't start- sounded just like a car fitted with a coil cut-off from years ago. Did same IA and car started immediately.

I had the same in my 2003 D3. The problem went away again but then came back on and off, eventually if was more on than off. The dealer had it for a week and then sent it back fixed. That very day it happened to me again!! They had it back in an eventually ended up ordering a new BOSE amp from Germany - apparently it was giving out duff fiber optic signals which was killing off the MMI!

Just had exactly the same failure to start again this evening. Funnily enough both times have been after the fire alarm at work went off at dinnertime, as I was sitting in the car having my butties. Is this just a coincidence, or do fire alarm systems, or the close proximity of fire engines produce some sort of signal that confuses the immobiliser, so when I unlock the car again three hours later to go home, it doesn't recognise the key code?

Ah, D3 S8, therefore you have Advanced Key, right?

It's liable to radio inteferance as far as I can tell.

When I took my four-day-old S8 to Norway, after a week I had an engine management light (turned out to be nothing major, pinched secondary air supply pipe, not that I knew that at the time), but as the car carried on working flawlessly up and down mountain roads otherwise, I didn't worry about it.

Fast-forward to the ferry terminal at Haugesund, and I got a good run and arrived an hour before the ferry did. We sat in the car and waited for the office to open while we listed to some Norwegian radio. While I'm sitting there, I notice the odometer says SAFE and I think "Oh dear", but I say nothing to the wife. When the office opened, I got out and pressed the lock button on the driver's door - nothing. I tried the remote - nothing. Oh dear indeed. I got checked in, and tried the key in the ignition - it fired up, thankfully.

I joined the queue for the ferry and rang the dealer to confirm the manual locking procedure (lift handle, insert key, close door, turn key, remove key and release handle IIRC), and resigned myself to a service visit when I got back to the UK.

When I got into the ferry, suddenly everything behaved itself - the locking buttons started to work, as did the proximity unlock, the Start button began working again and the display stopped saying SAFE.

Then, when going through the Tyne Tunnel, the DIS briefly said "Key not in car?" causing me to panic briefly, but it was there all right. I've had this once since then, and I suspect it may have been when passing an emergency services vehicle...

So, I think radio inteference can throw the Advanced Key system out, which would probably also affect the immobiliser function.

Oh, and one last thing "sitting in the car having my butties" - Noooooooo! EEK2.GIF What if you get crumbs in those MMI buttons? I've heard US reports (where they tend to eat bagels or muffins and drink coffee on the way into work) saying that MMI crashes and random rebooting behaviour can be caused by stuck buttons on the MMI control panel.

How long does the car work for without the key in the car? I was turning Jon's S8 around at his Mum's while he popped in, but he had the key in his pocket. I managed to get about 30 yards away, turn around, and pull back up with it saying "Key not in car" and without then engine cutting out at all.

Surely it must shut down at some point, but how can it do so at a safe time?

When you next stop it, it just won't start again as far as I understand it. It makes sense, the key needs to be in the car to start it, then if you drive off it won't stop suddenly (safety issue as you rightly note), but it can't be started without the key in th car next time.

I've heard about the radio interference problem before, especially at Dover Harbour, but was surprised that the problem's occurred several hours later. The fire engine had left when I locked the car agin after dinner (crumbs not a problem due to a]napkins and b] horrible, soggy baguettes sold in our staff canteen!) I presume the immobilisor works on a rolling code, like the alarm, and suspect that this has been the problem. Solving it appears to be done by re-locking the car on the fob and walking away for 30 seconds, before unlocking on the fob, rather than just opening the door with the key in pocket. (Stand too near, or don't wait long enough and it continues)
