Traction Control Issues?

The traction control comment relates to B5 and B6 traction control cutting the power. With a quattro the power of course helps you corner. Botang, of this parish, and Toby, mate from Bedford, have proved this to me in their quattros. Great feeling!

One B5 S4 owner on RS246 had a 30 mph head on leaving a roundabout, road was slippy, tc cut all the power and he understeered straight into an oncoming car. Write off. Similar issues with the RS4. Will not let you pull away rapidly with much steering lock on. So you go to pull onto a dual carriageway, drop the hammer but the car doesn't do anything....

Does this relate to ESP? More on this would be interesting.

I've got to push mine quite hard to lose traction. It's my first non front wheel drive car and I thought it would have a bit more oversteer. But I guess if I wanted oversteer I should've got a rear wheel drive car. It's just the way the manufactures have to make cars these days to protect Joe Public from himself frown.gif Maybe when I get a re-map it'll make things a bit more interesting ECLIPSe.gif

TC cutting all the power would not have caused the problem. You don't get understeer by pulling power off. He'd have hit the kerb anyway. TC's good but it's not magic. It doesn't overcome physics.

With regards pulling out on to a dual carriageway - my TT really suffered with this. When ever I filled up with petrol (my local Shell is on a dual carriageway), I always used to turn ESP off before pulling out. I'd rather have a bit of spin than have all the power cut.

In the S4 (Torsen instead of Haldex although I'm not sure this is relevant), I've never had this problem despite pulling away faster. I think on later models the ESP s/w is upgraded and hence it copes with this sort of thing better. I believe the B7 has another update on the s/w so should be even better still.

Thanks for that, quick question can you floor it and get more traction with Torsen compared the Haldex? For better standing starts in the S3 i also turn off ESP.

It certainly feels like you do. I guess since it's mechanically always 4WD there is less decision making etc going on. It was one of the first things I noticed when I changed cars. I'm not having a go at the Haldex as i was more than happy with it for 3+ years but I do feel the Torsen is better.

I must admit, the times when my ESP has come on have been in the wet either on a roundabout or pulling out of a side road (usually turning right). As you put your foot down, the light comes on and the car feels like it is wheel-spinning (but isn't). You aim the car where you want it but I feel it does actually help by slowing you down.

I also have an audible ESP warning "was that wheelspin" - aka the missus.
