Hi All, I have recently become the proud owner of a 2000 A8 with 96k. I have had some great cars in my driving years but this is the best yet! I've spent time reading through the posts to get a few ideas and tips on minor probs I have. Have been ripped many times by poor service in the past so am now made very aware by your "stealers" advice. My motor is going into an Audi dealer for a quick (1 hour) inspection to give me an idea of its condition before its next service in approx 9k. It runs great so far. Only thing is a very slight coolant loss. Over say 1k it uses about 1" in the header tank. Do they have any history of water probs? Other annoying thing is an occasional ticking from the dashboard - your posts have guided me on that. Thanks. At the mo I am trying to grow the "balls" to drive the car as confidently as it expects to be driven. I have never experienced such surefooted handling and pure power/torque in all my years and all my cars!

First Off Welcome to TSN! 169144-ok.gif

The coolant loss problems could be anything from a hose or connection to a cracked head gasket UHOH7.GIF (later hope not and probably not the cause). As far as I am aware there are no real issues with coolant loss with these cars. Just in case check the oil breather cap for any creamy residue. If your having to top up make sure its the right Audi approved coolant (correct colour).

As far as the clicking behind the dash is concerned I read somewhere probably here or audiworld.com that its something to do with heater/ventillation mechanism; more specifically a cam revolving and or a potentiometer playing up. I dont think its fatal just a little annoying and most folk tend to put up with it cos of the cost to fix has been quoted in the high £800's. Me I just crank up the stereo.

Hope this helps some of the other more experienced A8/S8 guys will give you more info when thay logg on.

Good luck 169144-ok.gif

Hi ya, & welcome!

Coolant loss - I had that after my cambelts were changed. I kept an eye on the header tank and bought the red coolant for the ally engine. I used about 1 third of it, and that was it. Level then stayed the same.

I beleive, it was when the belts were changed, Audi would have refilled the mixture - I bet they used more water than they should have used. That evaporated off, so I had to put in more 'raw' stuff. Anyway, it has been sitting at the same level for 8K miles, so presume good!

Hope that helps!

What model do you have?

Welcome to TSN Audidoo. 169144-ok.gif

Oxford eh? Easy access for all the TSN meets....Windsor, MK, Bath..........

As far as your coolant loss is concerned, indeed ensure that you are using the correct fluid. This is easy to pick up from any Audi dealer, and is 'cheap as chips'. I always keep some handy, just in case.

Get some pics up, soon as you can, I'm sure we'd all like to see what you've got 169144-ok.gif

Thanks for the warm welcome. As soon as I can do the pic's I will post some. It's metallic green and in really good trim, given the mileage and I love it to bits. The telly gives a good picture, but no sound. Guess I'll watch telly in doors and just drive it. I keep finding reasons to go places just to be drivin the beastie! When will I ever grow up eh! Blame my Son for this juvenile behaviour, he made me test drive it and I was smitten. How do I find out about the meetings please?
