Ari
Not got the spare cash or the space, but I quite like the idea of getting a well cared for prestige car from yesteryear as a bit of a toy. Just found the perfect example, a tidy looking black Porsche 911SC 3.0 litre coupe, 1980 and only 84,000 miles and full history. A lot of fun as a weekend racer for circa £11,000. http://www.tonygilbertcars.co.uk/ Stuff like Porsche 928S4's and early (Dallas era) Mercedes SL500's also appeal greatly at around the £10K mark, or how about an original Ur Quattro? One day...
activa
Looks like a very nice example(if the photos anything to go by) In a few weeks I'm gonna get a 944 Turbo SE for exactly the same reasons.Something to use when the mood takes but don't have to run as an everyday car. Can't wait to be honest,it's been a couple of years since I drove one but just remember it being brilliant. Shouldn't wish your life away but.......
Ari
Yes, 944 Turbo SE another brilliant example. As long as its been looked after and you keep it under cover and don't use it as the daily driver it should provide loads of fun for minimum outlay (bearing in mind most of the value will stay in the car). Provided nothing expensive breaks of course... Think you have to pick wisely though, an '80s Porsche or Mercedes should be a good bet, but a similar age Ferrari or Jaguar more likely to be a serious moneypit I guess. Pity really, a Jaguar XJS V12 Convertible would be on the list otherwise.
Ari
These are falling into £15K terratory too, a 500SL would be a serious cross continental cruiser for the money, just right for blasts across France and Italy in the summer. [/ QUOTE ] That's a very good point-they are probably about as low in price now(circa 10k for a late one with hoop spoiler)as they're gonna get before possibly starting to rise in price again as good ones become harder to find. And like you say,as long as the expensive components don't let go it should be O.K! Quite like your choice of the Merc SL but can't get convinced over the Jag.British heritage maybe, but that scary handling would s**t the life out of me!! Ari
Jags don't handle, they waft. More one for an summer evenings gentle cruise to a riverside pub than a fast blast. Not suggesting it as an alternative to a 944 Turbo thats for sure!

Still scare the life out of me wafting round a light bend on the A41 at anything over 40mph! Late ones must be quite collectable now though, never see 'em! Ari
I had this mad idea in the early '90s that a cheap second-hand XJS could be a great investment. Think of someone buying a Jaguar E Type for £2K all those years ago and what it was worth at the height of the classic car boom in the late '80s. I had this crazy idea that an XJS bought for about £10K would be worth £200K in 20 years time, and provide a bit of enjoyment in the meantime. Fortunately I realized that it would probably cost a fortune to maintain and keep in a condition that would mean it was worth anything in the future, plus I had no where to put it. Good job really, the XJS has hardly proven to be the legend the E Type was! Bought a house instead, a somewhat better strategy as it turned out. activa
How glad are you that you took the house option! When I said they must be quite collectable I meant maybe worth 10k or something as opposed to the saloon versions of the era that'll probably be lucky to fetch 2k! And just think how much rust repair you've saved yourself.Horrific to think that any 90's car would rot but Jags do. I remember when my Father-in-law bought one new in 91 and he ended up selling it a year later 'cos he couldn't handle me finding more rot on it every time I went round there. Changed to a 7-series and never looked back. Can't imagine how much damage that era did to Jags rep!!

BTW How much were they new? Bet it was a small fortune!
