New A4 Buying Advice

Hi,

New to this forum and am looking to change my BMW 320 diesel to a new diesel A4. My choice is basically between the 2.0 TDi SE or S line spec. The S line looks good but not sure about the sports suspension with either 17" or 18" wheels. Does it seriously affect the ride? Are there any "must have" options as well? Any advice on making my choice would be really appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

hi mate,

the ride is much improved with the s-line.

the suspension is firm but not too hard to be uncomfortable for long journeys, even with 18" wheels.

have a test drive, you'll be pleasantly surprised. the s-line suspension is great for making the car feel planted and stable on the road, and it adds to the fun element too 169144-ok.gif

One essential is sports seats, they are soo comfortable. You get electric lumber support as standard with them and the seat base extends. Basically there is just much more adjustment with them than standard seats. The S-line will have these as standard (I think) but if you do go for the SE then make sure you spec these. Most comfortable seats I've ever sat in. 169144-ok.gif

All,

Wow what a quick response from this Forum. I had a test drive yesterday of a SE model but it had sports suspension and 17" wheels. It did feel a bit jittery over normal roads so was concerned that 18's might be a step too far. haven't tried one without sports suspension so nothing to compare it to.

Sounds like I should go for the S line as for not too much more you get the sport suspension and seats.

Thanks.

From experience, you get more for your money when you buy packages like s-line, etc. You also get more bang for your buck when you buy larger engines.

eg tt 150 cloth seats, 16" alloys, sports suspension about 22K. tt 180 leather, 18" alloys, lowered sports, + bigger engine and quattro, about 24K.

For A4, s-line package is good. not too sure about the new a4 though, as you get less in the s-line than in the old s-line. look through and see comparisions. on the whole, s-line would give you more items than if you were to buy it on its own.

IMHO you'd be better off going for a 1.9TDI GmbH Sport (nearly new) like mine! or, if you really like the B7, go for the S-line, although it costs more than the one I bought!

The 2.0L TDI is a nice little engine. I've got sports suspension and 18's on my B6, it is fantastic!

Welcome to TSN!

Ok I have listened to the advice given and looked around this forum more. I am now drawn to an earlier A4 and have just come back from a test drive of a 1.9 TDi Quattro (52 reg). I can't believe the grip of this. The salesman drove it first and he did not slow down for corners at all and I was cr***ng myself. I think it may be sometime before I have the confidence to drive like that.

What do you think is a reasonable price for this from a main dealer? It has 29000 miles, sat nav, rear beepers and folding seats?

Cheers,

Steve

I would say you could get one less than that, I was offered a 53 plate S-line avant, heated seats, symphony with Bose, auto lights, auto wipers, interior light package in moro blue with black speed cloth for £15,800.

It was from a ford dealer but that was £500 more than any other dealer was offering him.

have you searched www.allapprovedcars.com as there are loads of nearly new ones on there with big savings.

The stealer sold my old 52 plate non-quattro a year ago, otherwise very similar car, for 17,450.

I would expect to pay 18k tops for this car, but try and pay 16.5-17k, there are quite a few about..

Now that is a good deal - could be tempted to make the change to petrol myself....

I agree that 53 plate S-line is a good deal and I would be tempted to go for it. The dealer has the car I'm considering up for £16,000. Reminder - it's a 52 (but Feb 03) 1.9 tdi sport quattro with sat nav, 18" wheels and some other extra bits. I think I'll be telling him tomorrow I'll have it. So I'll be able to join the forum properly then.

All I have to do now is sell my beemer privately. Anyone interested in an BMW 04 reg 320 diesel ES saloon?

the audi dealer might buy it off you. could help leverage a discount off the asking price for the audi, and save hassle maybe?

Dieselmister you have been busy.... tee hee

The value of your car doesn't change your right. The amount that he might be able to add to the deal from the new car that you are getting does. He might have got it really cheap for a trade in but put a high sticker price on it if its second hand. Go for that car and he can pass what seems like a better deal by taking a lot of the new car or valuing your trade in at a higher amount. Its all in how hard you push and in finding the right car sometimes that they are ready to sell.

My Dad got a fantastic deal on a BMW once because he happened to want a car that had just been delivered to be a demonstrator, the dealership might have got the car nice and cheap and thus the valuation on his car was far more than he was expecting. Deal and my Dad were both happy with the deal. Everyone was happy.

My Dad bought a brand new S320cdi last week, he traded his 2 1/2 year old e270cdi in, when he was looking at an E320cdi they were offering £19k on his, then when he said he would take the S320cdi they upped the trade in to £21750.

As they are replacing the S in 18 months he managed to get £5000 off the price, then when they offered another £1500 off to register it before the end of the month he said yeah OK, but I also want £25 back on my e270cdi. They worked it all out and agreed the deal.

So his trade in went from £19k to £25k and he got 10% discount as well, as DM said, it depends what you are buying.

There is an S-line on ebay at the moment, maybe worth keeping an eye on that?
