lmmlmmam
We demo'd a A3 sportback yesterday for my wife, it was a 1.6FSI. She loved the car and thought the performance was fine. I wasn't particularly impressed with the engine. Admittedly it had only done 1000mls so was quite tight. But I found it a bit coarse under load at low revs and very gruff when rev'd harder. I really liked the handling of the car and that made me want to press on even given the horrid weather. Plus we were 5 up when I was driving. What engine choice would you guy's suggest considering to give a bit more go with out sending the costs up too much. Although it will be her day to day car, it also has to do the family stuff (because I have a cab), so it is important that I'm happy with the performance as well. Also, does the 1.6FSi improve noticeably with a few more miles on? TIA CabMac
ian_m
I cant answer on the FSi, but my S-Line has the 2.0TDi and I have to say its a great engine, I havent had a TD before and was a bit nervous as to how it would perform, I have to say though, this is a great car, fair enough it costs a fair bit more than the 1.6 but IMHO well worth it! lmmlmmam
Thanks for that AS. The 2.0TDi certainly looks interesting. She does around 12K miles anually so deisel doesn't really win on cost grounds but if it drives better then it may be the way to go. Has anyone tried both the 1.9TDi and 2.0TDi. I don't know what the real difference is.
ian_m
Cab Mac, where in the Uk are you? I am in the SW, you can check out my S-Line if its any help!
cdb2
Hi Cabmac, You could also try the 2.0 FSI. From memory the combined mpg is 38 compared to 42 for the 1.6 FSI, so not a great deal of difference. 0-60 in 9 secs rather than 11 secs too. I tried the 2.0TDi and the 2.0 FSI. Clearly the TDi does more mpg but the FSI is apparently marginally quicker to 60 than the TDi on paper. The TDi has a lot of low down torque which is fun but you soon run out of revs and need to change up. I decided on the 2.0 FSI. I don't do many miles and therefore don't need a diesel. I also couldn't live with the terrible clattery noise it makes, I thought it was quite bad. Just my opinion, we are all different and want our cars for different things! lmmlmmam
AS thanks for the offer. I'm up in the Midlands & have a pretty generous dealer, so the problem is more finding time to test the different options than getting access. Will let you know what I think when we get chance to check the 2.0TDi Cheers CM
lmmlmmam
Yeh I'm also concerned about the lack of refinement with the deisel. Just going to have to try it and see how it seems. I gave up trying to make the 1.6FSI go, it wasn't sounding good and I'm sure the passengers were going to start complaining. Sounded much nicer when my wife was driving, I just don't think she realised that there wasn't much left in reserve for the occasions when you do want to get a move on. Booster
CabMac, I'm in the midlands too, how generous is your dealer being? PM me if you don't want to post it in the forum.
lmmlmmam
Nothing mega Booster, I've now had three extended demo's from them ranging from about 6 hours to 24 hours. There attitude has always been spot on. PS forgot to say, it's Derby Audi.
Booster
Ah, my new one is coming from Leicester Audi. I have known the salesman for many years (before I had even thought about an Audi and I am now on my 3rd). Let me know your spec and I'll get you a price. Even if you don't want to go to another dealer it will be a bargaining tool
gizze
Problem with Diesel cars if you are used to petrols is the short rev range on a manual. It will drive you nuts constantly changing gears round town. But you can leave it in 5th on a run and it will pull very low down.
marriedblonde
I ended up changing from petrol to diesel due to the miles I drive. I opted for the DSG gearbox due to the short rev range of oil burner to get over the problem of constantly changing gear in and around town. They are noisier but it's only really a problem when the engines cold, the rest of the time you barely notice. J.
