steveooo
Hi Guys, My audi S3 has developed a horrible whistling noise when i hit above 40 MPH, the noise is coming from the internal Air Vent that does/de-mists the front windscreen. To set the context: It sounds kind of like a window is open I took my pride and joy to the local stealership who took it on a 20 mile test drive the cheeky 's and they recognised that there is a noise coming from that location and it would be charged on an hourly basis to diagnose the cause if the noise. I have looked under there for the obvoius causes, leaves, loose Turbo heat bandages, tried to turn off the heaters and air flow to that top vent with no joy. Can anbody please give me some areas i could look into to rectify this horrible noise that is doing my head in. Many Thanks Steveooo
Chav
on the A4 you can turn the air/con off completely. can you do that on the A3 and does it make a difference?
Mollox
Steve? Is it remapped? Would you say it happend more on heavy throttle loads at lower revs (e.g. pulling hard in 4th from 35-40 mph for example?) If so, pop the bonnet, have the plastic engine cover off and do a visual for a holed hose. Traces of oil spray may lead you to any offending holed rubber hoses

Mollox
Steve, the central vent is immediately behind the turbo so there will be additional noise, bordering on whistling, as the turbo is being made to work harder. A marginal increase in noise is normal. Sorry, can't find any pics right now. Anything excessive could well be indicative of a hose fault. You might have had a hairline or minor hole which has now been forced open by that lovely extra boost. Pop the two pop screws, lift off the engine cover and cast your attention to the back of the engine bay. You'll see the turbo wrapped in its heatproof foil wrapper, to the left will be the big metal pipe with the "don't touch" hand on it. There are, I think 4 small hoses coming off of this, one of those was holed on mine - quite a big hole - but it was easily missable were it not for the oil spray. To the right of the turbo, there are a number of smaller rubber hoses leading to the diverter valve etc. Basically, in this whole area there are a number of rubber and plastic hoses. Check 'em all and look for any that might have popped off completely. By the sounds of it, it'll be in the middle of the engine bay near the turbo, right at the back, if you're hearing it so clearly through the vent. Remember, a bit of extra noise is normal though
