Ari
Set the PC to defrag whilst I was at lunch yesterday, came back an hour later and it was still going. Left it another hour or more, still going. In the end I had to cancel it as needed to use the PC (email, Word, Tyresmoke etc). So can I have it defragging and use it at the same time? Just leave it defragging in the background basically?
sayerbloke
You shouldn't really. The Defragger is moving files around and if you`re using it you might be accessing files it`s moving and so on. How much hard-drive space do you have left? If you don't have much it`ll take a lot longer [if it can do it at all].

Waylander
shouldnt take that long but it dos depend on if you use the defrag that comes with xp [slow] and if you have a big hdd. i would suggest leaving it be though and maybe defrag it overnight or when it is having some much-needed down time. some free defrag tools are good/fast. the built-in xp defrag is a cut-down version of diskeeper anyway
Chav
Hi Ari, Its fine to work away whilst the defragger is running, unless its a very old DOS-based one, which i doubt it is here. You may find the time remaining will increase sometimes depending on what files you use/change whilst its running, but thats it.

scooby_simon
or you could schedule a task to run one a week to do it
Chav
[ QUOTE ] or you could schedule a task to run one a week to do it [/ QUOTE ] My machines defrag every night at 5.00AM. The more often you do it, the less time it takes. Always worthwhile though
Ari
Tend to turn the PC off at night unless it is backing up. No reason why I shouldn't leave it turned on and defragging I guess... Using Windows 2000.
sayerbloke
I think the way Win2K and XP compare fragmentation must be different. You can leave 2K for a year and only have maybe 2% fragmentation... but XP is at about 10% after a month or so!
DHA
My mac manages disc space automatically. No need to defrag here!
Foggy
By the very nature of the way they work all file systems are prone to fragmentation, even your Mac
