silentandy
First post so hello to everyone. Has anyone managed to get a discount on the new GTI? The what you should aim to pay price on whatcar.com suggests you should be able to get one but I've so far been unsuccessful apart from online brokers who I'm a bit dubious of. One quoted me a discount of nearly £2000 which I find impossible to believe! Should I hold out or just bite the bullet and order from my local dealer? pile
I got a £1300 discount from my dealer, at the time ( January) in all the mags they were saying that they were not giving discounts, but they matched the "drive the deal" price i found on the internet. You might be able to get more depending on the spec.
Pureguilt
I managed to get a £1600 discount only a few weeks ago plus mud flaps, year 2 & 3 VW assistance and 1 free service.

Mollox
Not my local dealer, that's for sure! They haven't even been able to arrange a test drive for me (mailed them over 2 months ago) The S3 has forgiven my temporary wavering and we're happy again now
Pureguilt
Just play hardball. Stealers hate to think they are being outdone by the competition so play each dealer off against the other other; I usually do this by handing the sales person the card of another stealer with the discount marked on the back (by me) and tell him to phone for verification if he has doubts, they never do. Once they agree to match the competition go for incentives like free service etc just to sweeten the deal – works every time.
Gareth
Forgive for me for my doubt but I would be extremely surprised-and shocked-if you really achieved a £1,600 discount on the Mk 5 GTI...especially as that is more than the margin the dealer has on the car in question.... I smell a rat...
silentandy
I couldn't wait in the end and placed an order at list. Luckily the stealer had one from this quarters allocation left so I should get it April. They did give me £1300 more for my trade in than what I was expecting though so that makes up for paying list. ucjtckc
I ordered this week. Had 5% discount offered through a dealer in the midlands (introduced through the broker Carfile). Before I ordered I decided to check if that was the best I could get so phoned about 15 dealers from the vw dealer advert in this months What Car. All said no discount apart from one - got 6.5% from dealer in North East. Not too bad a deal (considering) but still slightly gutted because I was thinking of ordering last November when Drivethedeal were offering an amazing 11%!! bfc1912
Also missed out on Drivethedeal and when I phoned up last month they said their next allocation wasn't untill August. Didn't get a discount on mine from Stealer but get a very good price for trade-in. Air-con gone on car plus other things. Stealer din't ask, so I didn't say. Always good to get one back on them. Pureguilt
I don’t have to prove anything to you; besides all deals are commercial in confidence. Other people are achieving discounts of between 5-9%. My own deal equates to approx 7% excluding dealer supplied freebies.
pile
Im sure u can get a discount of £1600 if u get the right dealer, i got £1300 off because at the time that was what drive the deal was offering on the net . To be honest i could of got more i think due to the fact they said yes straight away. After telling this to a friend of mine he got £1500 on a low spec model, so its out there u just got to go hassle for it
sw1
I managed to get a 2.5K discount back on the 4/11/04 from drivethedeal.com . This was before the hype. I paid 20K for the following spec, Red Gti, 18"alloys, spare full size alloy, Xenons, Winter Pack, Lux pack 2, 6 disc + armrest and rear parking sensors. The discounts that give are now a lot smaller so I was lucky

Some questions for you to answer maybe.... 1. Was this a UK car from a UK dealer? 2. What was the list price, with, or without options? 3. What were the "dealer Freebies" and their value? 4. When is the car for delivery and did you actually order it? 5. What do you understand the VW dealer margin (front end) to be on a Golf GTI mk5? 6. Was there a part exchange in the deal and if so what was it and it's valuation? If you can answer those questions I'd be happy to see your detailed response.... Pureguilt
I don’t have to be cross examined by you or anyone else on my business dealings. Perhaps you are just a little miffed that you did not get a similar deal or did you?
sw1
Mine is UK supplied from Specialist Cars (Big VW dealer in Abeerdeen), I have been dealing with VW ever since I placed the order, the broker only set up the deal. The cost of mine included delivery on a transporter down to me

Perhaps you are just a little miffed that you did not get a similar deal or did you? [/ QUOTE ] Well if you can't answer what are perfectly valid questions it pretty clear to me-and most other people reading this- that you blowing smoke out of your chuff hole!! I didn't get anything like the the level of discount that you are claiming. IF you did get a clear 8% discount I would be totally shocked because VW dealers are generally not giving any discounts on the GTI. That is a directive from VW UK head office and they have visability on all deals/registrations. You have to ask yourself why a dealer who doesn't need or shouldn't be allowed to discount the GTI gave you ALL of the margin on the car in question..... I happen to understand the car trade pretty well as I have a number of friends and contacts in it. Plus I buy and sell at least 4-6 cars a year so am pretty up on what is the current state of the market. This includes someone who is a Group DP of 6 VW dealerships in the midlands...therfore someone whose views/opinions can be believed...unlike yours and hey IF you can prove me wrong I'll give £50 to Comic Relief on your behalf, and if you can't/won't prove your 8% clear discount... how about doing the same?!?!? Over to you
pile
Gareth , if u want a discount have my car with the £1300 off. Ive just drafted a letter to cancel my order and get my deposit back. And as for stu1, i remember when Drive The Deal were offering that discount, it was great at the time but i missed that 1 . As i said my friend got a £1500 discount from his local dealer ( after i told him i got £1300 off) with out much hassle. Most people on this forum have got discounts over £1000 so i cant c the problem of Purequilt getting £1600 ? Y dont u start a poll on best prices ?
