chunky
Can somebody confirm that if you register as a seller on Ebay you are required to provide your bank account details ? This is what the Ebay website claims - seems a little dodgy to me. Cheers
UBM
To become UK verified, yes, but you can be UK unverified with a specific vendor limit. I've only just become verified rec ntly after hitting this limit. If you register with PayPal you only need a credit card. CARE : Don't get scammed like I nearly dif. Ensure it is a https site and the padlock symbol appears. It's a bit dodgy handing out your bank details on the net - there are loads of scams at the mo. Sparky
Also, never click on a link taking you back to Ebay's site. Always type the address in manually into your browser as this is what Ebay themselves say. This is to overcome the phishing scams whereby a normal looking ebay link takes you to a fake site. chunky
Thanks guys - still getting the same message when I try to set up my account so I'm not going to bother. The clock I was trying to get sell is just not worth the bother.
Sparky
Yes, you have to put your credit card on file if you plan to sell anything now. It's okay though, it's so they can collect their selling fees without hassle. You can remove it easily enough later.
chunky
I don't have a problem with a credit card, it's my bank account that I don't wish them to access. Once you enter the credit card it then requests your bank account.
Sparky
Never had that. You sure you're not filling in the optional direct debit part? It asked me for CC numbers and nothing else. That was last month.
R32North
I'm a regsitered / verified buyer and seller, and don't recall these issues when I set-up!
R32Ash
I'd have thought giving the bank details is safer than the credit card details? If you pay for something by cheque you are handing over your bank account details after all. I'm a reg'd buyer/seller too, but I can't remember exactly what i had to do to get set up though. Just beware of Paypal though. I use it regularly, but IMHO it offers less protection than other methods of payment in either direction, in that you can be stung by scams both ways if not careful. Sparky
No, your credit card is a far safer option than access to your bank. Most CC companies will insure you against fraud. Your bank wont. Ebay changed their policy sometime last year so before you didn't need to enter your CC at all. If you've bought some items and then start selling you can get around it - but if you're new and go to sell your first item with no user rating, you need a credit card. R32Ash
I see what you are saying Sparky, but if they are just asking for a bank account number and sort code in order to verify the address, I can't see it's a major risk? No one can use those actual details to do anything with the account after all. Whereas with a credit card number they could attempt to buy stuff, that would be covered by the CC company anyway though as you say.
UBM
When you become UK verified there are loads of security details like they send you part of a code, make two small transfers into your bank account, call you automatically to verify your phone number etc... chunky
This is exactly what it's asking me and I've tried it on 2 different pc's. I have also sent the ebay customer services an em who confirmed this. Heck this is just not worth the hassle for what I was trying to sell something worth so little. What I can't understand is that I have already brought stuff on ebay and have a 100% star rating on 17 transactions ?? In fact I'm trying to sell a new electronic clock that I bought on ebay. However the said item is a central european version which is always incorrect and can't be manually set. The seller claimed it was a learning experience - . I was going to try and sell it in Europe. As it was a xmas present I didn't bother checking it and gave him some good feedback so can't do anything about it. If it had been expensive then he would have had it surgically removed. Sorry for the rant.
